Hi ---my first post and would appreciate some assistance please ---- E300 Turbo Diesel, and I have water dripping down the offside of the sump. I am assuming it might be coming from the water pump, perhaps a gasket?? but cannot see where its coming from because of all the pipework in the way. So has anyone ever replaced the pump or the gasket on the big Diesel?? as it looks like, its removal of the turbo, the ex. manifold, the alternator and perhaps the radiator. The pump looks like it sits on the corner of the engine block along with the stat housing, but I dont have a pic of these items to see how many bolts are holding everything in place. Also as a thought, are there any core plugs on that side of the engine at all?? again I dont have any pics.
Thanks for any thoughts about my problem.

Welcome Toolman.

Check carefully where the water is leaking from as it may not be the pump.

Check around the thermostat housing, which is mounted low on the block on the offside, near the pump.

Water Leak

Dieselman----Thanks for your thoughts about the stat housing. I have tried today to get my fingers around and feel for a damp spot, but to no avail as there is so little room, you need the hands of a pixie. However I did notice a water pipe running underneath the stat housing, which appears to be part of the heating system.which is another possible source of the leak. I think I need to get it up on ramps and a halogen light underneath.

that is some turbo bolted onto the side of the 606, any details?

Dieselman---------- more thanks for the link for the pics and for the drain tap suggestion. On reflection this leak only appeared after i topped up the system with more antifreeze (genuine Mercedes) and as a stop gap I have put in a bottle of some American leak sealant (cost me a tenner) and this has apparently stemmed the water leak from where so ever it was coming from. I shall monitor the situation before I start stripping it all down, and if I do, I will take some pix.

Personally I wouldn't have used any leak sealant because they can play havok with radiators and hoses.
When you do the job make sure you flush the cooling system before refilling.

It's rather similar to this one on ebay. If you fancy 400+ BHP with no engine mods other than fuelling then this is the way to go.
