hey guys, am having a few probs with the old girl unfortunately.

A week ago the car on starting from cold did not change gear and was stuck in second gear. from reading threads here, i deduced it going into limp mode. However if the car was allowed to warm up abit and the key turn off then on again, the car would change as normal.

was going to get it checked this week when today it went into permanent limp mode: 2nd gear all the way, 40mph max!

The car had a gearbox oil and filter change 6 months ago and did not have any immediate problems afterwards. I did notice a squeal from the engine like a slipping fan belt begin about the time of the problem appearing, but only when hot (coincidence?). The car has done over 150K.

I have searched the threads here and have found some info to work with. Could it be a sensor/switch on the gearbox? How could you tell if its oil creeping into the loom? could it be the metallic plate in the gearbox? Would the fault show up on star diagnosis?

Have have an intercooler prob before whiched took ages and lots a money to diagnose, and hope it wont be the same with this

Any help you can provide will be much appreciated!

had oil checked, was near to max and ok. MAF changed 2 years ago- but dont think this would cause gearbox fault.

will get codes read!

got codes read as follows:

P2502 gear is implausible or the transmission is slipping - stored

P220A The speed comparison of Y3/6n2 or Y3 6n3 is implausible- Current & stored

P2500 The transmission has an impermissible transmission ration Stored.

Can any one shed some light on what these mean an where to look for the fault?

Right Scooby,

All these codes are connected and mean the same thing, the gearbox is slipping in one or more of it's gears, it looks like you have an internal gearbox fault which will need the gearbox to be removed and stripped to pinpoint. HTH.

update: mechanic said oil ingress in circuit board- req a new one (on order from mb-due tomor). quote for this and new oil and filter is £400. reasonable?

Pretty much, does not require removal of gearbox, just valve body.

Richard

That is a little over priced IMO.

The board is only £110 plus fitting and some fluid. £300max.

I have a similar problem with my 2001 E320 Estate. It runs fine for a few miles - all gears work- then loses all drive - as if it were in neutral but the light still says D. No other fAult lights come on. Same happens if the car is left idling and stationary for 25 minutes or so. Then, switch off ignition, wait a couple of minutes, restart and it's fine - changes through all the gears until another 5 miles or so, and no drive again. Star test shows codes P2500 and P2502. Help! Is it electronic or a new toque converter and gearbox?

Maybe a lack of fluid or the gearbox needs stripping to see what the problem is.

Did scoobysook ever find his solution to this problem? I have exactly the same problem and would like to know if he got it sorted and how...

As BlackC55 has stated, check ATF level first and go from there. Next would be to get it on STAR

Hi, yes, I have been through the whole process. I have now changed the conductor plate and pilot bush, new fluid, filter and gasket and the tcu is dry. Drove around feeling great for 3 weeks and maybe 1000 miles and then lost drive again. turn off and on and it resets and runs for 2 minutes then it returns to what feels like neutral. I have checked the TCU and it is bone dry. Its an 02 W210 320CDI. My only thoughts are my indie has put too much tranny fluid in after changing the plate, or cracked (or faulty) pilot bushing. The car is currently stuck at my house see. I have the same P2500, P220a, 2502 as I had prior to fitting the new plate. There was fluid in the pilot bush/plug when we did the change.

The fluid in the pilot bush should have stopped. Get the Indy to check the level or if you have lost confidence get one yourself and check it. Were the faults cleared and checked since?

You need to get it read again, the garage should not charge for this
