Wasted my day to go and see this car and was Very disappointed.
The car has had a very big hair cut, I mean clocked around 100,000 miles (hpi check shows this), very poor service history, and by far the worst condition leather Ive ever seen in a Mercedes. The tappets were noisy too, unless your local dont bother or get someone local to check it out for you. The seller is a really nice chap, its a real shame I cant say the same about the car. The funny thing is he spent more time looking at my car than I spent looking at his, atleast ive seen it, id be kicking myself otherwise!

So, I see I he's a private seller, or is he? Why didn't you challenge him about the mileage?

Your right, he is a private seller. He wasnt trying to hide anything, far from it in fact. He honestly thought it was a genuine car, until he saw the condition of my interior. He was a honest chap, and said if it doesnt sell through the traders he'll give me a ring and see what I offer for it, so I guess time will tell. If that were a e320 cab in that condition with around 150k on the clock id value it at £6-7k, I really dont think this car is worth £10k.
It needs a exterior respray due to rust on arches and several touch ups the size of 2p coins on the body. The interiror needs a full retrim, and I mean FULL. The noisy tappets could cost up to £1000 if the cams have worn as a result. The wheels were replica's and in very poor condition.
The car is currently on 85000 miles, my hpi report shows the car to have 105000 on the clock in 2000, funny how only the mot for that year was missing and so was the service stamps from 199-2002. After 2002 the mileage looks consistant, in effect this is a 150k car.
After the £4-5k spent on it the car will still be marked with a mileage discepency.
Its a real shame, this is the second e36 ive been to see thats been disappointing, although I must point out that the other was in a much better state than this.

You have met the man, so we can only accept your assessment of him, but if he is the honest person you suggest, then he will now inform everyone of the vehicles true mileage.

You have told him so now he has must surely NOT make any reference to the clocked mileage?? Unfortunately I always take with a pinch of salt what anyone tells me about the car they are selling.

And A124 E36s are how rare exactly? A great shame.
This is only the second E36 cabriolet ive seen for sale in 2 years of looking for one, Ive heard a few times that there were only 14 of them brought into the UK.

If thats the case then I've seen four of them in total and two belonged to one "wealthy" guy that I used to see driving them when I was in my teens when they were out and his silver one was written off...

Always fancied one, there used to be a guy around here that had a metallic green version that was absolutely mint, only ever saw it in the summer but have not seen it for a year or so. Good luck on your quest.

akash, is this car in Milton Keynes by any chance? I live here and swear I have seen that car out an about...

The car was in Stratford-on-avon.

As aka$h says, there were 14 W124 E36 cabriolets brought into the UK. There were a similar number of saloons, slightly more coupés, and only 7 or so estates - just over 50 cars in total.
There were also some earlier W124s that were converted by AMG (and other tuners). These were not E36s.

So , i take it from your username that you have a w124 E36 TE ?

Love to see it , have you got any pictures ? , i've never seen one , have seen a cab and a saloon but never an estate !!

regards

H

Sadly I had an E36 estate. It was gorgeous. Stunning. Right up there with the best cars you could hope to own. The 'sadly' refers to the fact that I had to sell it :( and most definitely not to owning it!

There are some pics at here. I fitted the 18" alloys - when the car was sold the original 17" wheels went with it. I miss that car.

Judging by the capital letters, HI STEVE!

the E36 cab is the ultimate W124 in my opinion. Right hand drive, straight 6, wind in your hair, auto. It'll see off any BMW 330Ci. Its just a bit tricky finding one. I've heard that there were only 14 brought into the UK (according to Mercedes Enthusiast anyway)

Surely if there were only ever 14 in the country, this one might be worth 'investing' in and restoring?

Believe me I tought about it, but the problem is the car will always have a shady past due to the hair cut on the mileage!
