Hi all i have got a w211 2004 e55 amg recently it has started doing a loud clunk that can be felt throught the car when you accelerate if you accelerate slowly it does not do it i had a garage look at it he checked bushes and says it might be diff bushes but not ***** is it a big job to change diff bushes any one know cheers lee..........

change the gearbox oil, and oil filter, and gasket

hi lee, also check you rear subframe bushes, there has been a few cases where the bolts rip out and welding is needed (worst case), i slight thud when accelarating hard is normal, a loud clunk is not. Also rear brakes can stick when reversing and when you move off forward give the thud effect.

Hi thanks i will check the subframe i have found out more there is actually 2clunks together split seconds apart it will do it even if you dont touch the brakes just by giving the accelerator a few presses you can get it to do it every time you can set off gently up to 20 mph then jump on accelerator and its that bad it seems to shake the car when it happens :(

Hi

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I'm having EXACTLY the same problem with my newly purchased 2004 E55.

I was wondering if you ever managed to get to the bottom of this problem because I am spending endless money having it diagnosed but to no avail.

Any information would be massively appreciated.

Thanks
Ben

can a bad transmission mount give any clunking noise?
sometimes when I stand still with my C43 and press the accelerator a bit hard I can hear a little clunk somewhere from the rear.

I had my mechanic check the bushings with a breaker bar, he said alles ok no wear or tear.

So could it be a worn transmount giving bad noize?

My rear transmission mount is actually shot to bits. I have a new one on order from MB. I would put the noise down to this but for the fact that the thump noise is coming specifically from the drivers side rear. If it were from the rear of the car in general (more centralised), I would be fairly sure it was the trans mount.

The new mount is being fitted Wednesday, so at least that will be ruled out if the problem persists.

Thanks for your input

v8Ben, would be interesting to see if this solves your problem

Hi,

My E320 cdi estate does exactly the same thing sometimes when you accelerate away quickly, I have not investigated properly yet but I am pretty sure it is the engine twist connected to either a broken bush or engine mount etc....p.s. my clunk seems to come from the gearbox area and then sometimes seems to be coming from the nearside front making me think it is an engine mount.
Paul.

Upon detailed investigation, it turns out my rear subframe bushes are shot. The right front being the worst according to the mechanic. A fairly massive undertaking labour-wise, so certainly not the cheap fix I was hoping for! Oh well, problem solved at least.

Prop-shaft couplers need checking also
