Has anyone done anything along these lines?

The only thing in a week of driving I am not loving is the wheel.

Recover in alacantara maybe or a new wheel? Have had a look but can't find anything here only DCT in the US. Anyone got one of their wheels?

Cheers

UK company for retrims but they don't do flat bottom etc or didn't when I asked...

What year is your e55? You might be able to put a cls wheel on or a sl65 wheel depending on year or if not you can change the electrics and clock spring to allow you to do so

Its 2004 so not sure thats possible but happy to be corrected. I will take a look at that retrim option. Size of the wheel is fine its just too thin IMO

I would love to have proper flappy paddles instead of buttons for Manual changes, think I read somewhere this is possible with a later steering wheel. Mine is an early 04 model though so it might be too complicated/ expensive.

Is the centre grill on your dash slats or mesh?

You can fit the paddles to your current wheel it's just a bit of modding required...

Post a pic of your current wheel and it will be more help, I have found a place that can retrim your current wheel, make it thicker and flat bottom it too if you wish...

Also where are you from your profile says Oxfordshire, I'm near burford so if you need help doing paddles I did mine so could give you a hand

Thanks mate, I will get a pic up later today, I am in South Oxfordshire, Wallingford area.

Depending on what you can get the parts for compared to your budget you can fit the later E63 wheel which is far nicer than your current one and will come with the paddles attached. You'd obviously need the later airbag to go with it and also a converter for the electrics inside the wheel. Not cheap but should be doable for less than that US wheel you were looking at.

I'm currently talking to a company that will do flat bottom, retrim in all leather or part leather part alcantata or all alcantata also made thicker for under £300 if you send your wheel in once they send you the new one...

Try and drive a car with a flat bottom wheel before committing if you can. I personally find them awkward when manoeuvring, especially when letting the wheel slip through your hands, you may not mind it of course but it's an expensive mistake if you do.

Personally think they're a bit naff on road cars too but we all have different tastes obviously :)

Yep I have decided against the flat bottom.

Waiting for an answer from Lederlenkrad: Neu bezogenes Lederlenkrad für Audi, BMW, Ford, Mercedes und VW von der Sattlerei Stafjew im Austausch and will report back

Prices I have been given
£265 for retrim in black leather with stitching colour of your choice

Extras
Flat bottom £35
1/2 alcantara £20
Full alcantara £35
A coloured marker at 12 o'clock position is £10
