Good afternoon

just a quick question I have today had a message pop up on the dash of the e63 to top up 1l of oil on my next refuel

Whats peoples recommendations on the best oil to use ?

Putting my registration number into a few sites it shows I can use either 0w-40 or 5w-40 again what are people using ?

I might even buy in bulk for future use if it works out cheaper instead of buying singular 1l bottles

Best regards

Buy Mercedes 5w-40 oil. It’s available in i litre bottles (as wel as larger)from your local main dealer parts counter, and is surprisingly affordable. I bought in bulk from Mercedes-Benz of Edinburgh on eBay, and I keep one in each car, with some spares in the garage.

Awesome mate thank you 😊

Your main dealer will sell small canvas 1 litre oil covers which zip around the oil container. You can then Velcro it in position so it doesn’t take move around whilst driving.

Just purchased one of the genuine Mercedes oil bags on ebay for £9.99 delivered and managed to grab the last 1l of oil from listers Mercedes on eBay for a bargain £7 delivered.

I can now buy a bulk amount of oil like above and transfer 1l every time to this bottle for when it’s needed

Great replies as usual thank you both 👍

I've always used 0w-40 as that what the spec sheets told me and the garage!

Yes it listed both options on the registration checker when looking for oil which is what confused me but I’ve literally just looked through the paperwork that came with the car and it shows it’s been using 5w-40 so I’m ok with what I ordered

My M157 engine has always had 5w-40 Mercedes branded oil put in every service from the main dealer.
My previous E55 used the same spec, recommended by my indy.

Only 5/40 in all my m156.

Traditionally dealers used 0w-40 up to the early years of the M156 but then switched to 0w-50, which from memory was linked to the oil draining down causing the “tickety tappets”.
