Fitted new rear disks at the weekend together with EBC Greenstuff pads all round.

While I was at it I washed and waxed the alloys inside and out and painted the rusty old brake callipers with Hellfrauds heat resistant silver paint.

They do say (whoever they are) that the wheels maketh the car and they are quite right. Looks the doggie’s doodah’s now. :bannana:

I haven’t had a chance to really test the pads yet as I like to bed then in for a good few miles but they do seem to bite better than the standard ones. There is a little more brake dust than I was hoping for but it does seem to clean off easier.

Watch this space.

There is always more dust to start with as the pads need to bed in , this will ease off very soon. Any dust does wash off with ease, I use a washing up brush to clean mine just with a hose pipe.

Some one said that the RED ceramic are the best for low dust, I had them on another car but I sold it before I could test

Hello,

Please report back my wifes cars needs new pad and I have heared the green stuffs give off less yucky stuff...

Save me the hasle of cleaning them...

Cheers

Greenstuff are definately good for both bite and MUCH less dust.
The dust will be a light coating and it wil not burn into the lacquer.

Best fitted all round otherwise the Greenstuff are doing more of the work so wear faster and the braking will be unbalanced.

I don't follow your bias theory DM?

No real problem with any dust other than that which comes off thick and fast on our Golf. VW pads. Really nasty to clean off.

Still don't see how better front brakes can make the rears work in a lesser proportion to a concernable degree?

The 72/28% ratio is worked out using a similar formula for the front and rear pads, if you fit fronts with a better friction coefficient, then a lower pressure will be applied to the pedal resulting in less than the 28% going to the rear wheels

Thanks Malcolm, I did notice that they come with a 'special' coating on them which is supposed to make them bed in quicker. This could explain more dust in the first few miles.

The Greenstuff pads have about 20% higher friction so will impart that much more braking power to the disk.
Having run the same car with only front then all round Greenstuff I could feel a difference in the braking bias and also see the amount of dust and wear alter.

If the braking bias is as Malcolm says 72%/28% then add 20% more friction to the front this will alter the bias to something like 75%-80% frontal braking.

The coating is a cleaner coat designed to strip the disk of old material and rust. This is the dust you are seeing now, it will fade.

To take this one stage further, I fitted racing pads to the front on my V70R.

The effect is that I am getting through rear pads and disc at an alarming rate and the fronts are not wearing at all. The pedal pressure required is also higher

I must change them while I remember

I noticed the reverse when I had Greenstuff on the front only. They were wearing down and the rears were not wearing at all, in fact the disks were going rusty.

Our other car has VAG pads and they are very dirty and burn into the wheel lacquer, they will be changed for Greenstuff once worn down.

I have the black racing pads on the V70R front only, the front disc are now becoming glazed looking with no wear in some 12k miles
