Hi folks!

I picked up my new toy on Saturday and I've got to say it runs wonderfully.

There are some wee niggles but they can be sorted out simply enough!

It's lost a few of its original 231 horses as would be expected but still runs nicely.

It's literally like cruising down the motorway sitting on a big leather sofa!

Last night I drove up from West London to Sheffield and cruised at around 70mph all the way with a few spurts of 80mph.

I topped up the tank before I left and this morning i filled it back up to the brim with 20.53 litres.

I travelled 175 miles between fills so that means i got about 38.75MPG average (5miles or so town driving included).

My question is this, what have you all got as your best MPG in a merc with this type of engine, ie 300 E-24 or even 300E?

It would help me to know if mine is performing better or worse than it should!

Regards,

KJ

Sounds bloody good to me. I have a fault in my speedo meaning that it under-records and hence it appears that I travel at an average of 80mph, but my Audi struggles to do more than 40mpg on a run- And that is a 4-year old td!

It means that on a tank I could travel about 550 miles!

Thats nearly Sheffield to Glasgow and back!

I get 51 mpg from the C270/CLK270cdi engines.

Maybe I should ditch the CLK also and get myself a mint 300 CE-24!

Any takers?

:)

That seems very, very high. I used to have a 300E and rarely saw better than mid 20s miles per gallon, with urban driving yielding significantly less than 20 mpg.

Whilst I'm not doubting your numbers, it might be worth doing a few more runs to see if this excellent economy stays the same. :)

Rose Chap,

Did you have the 12v or the 24v engine?

Would there be a significant difference?

I did take it really easy, ensuring that the economy needle was all the way to the left in the black!

It was still an enjoyable drive however.

Regards,

KJ

I had the 12v saloon which, according to the figures, put out 188 BHP vs 231 BHP in the 24v.

Even so, it was a pretty quick car and made an excellent noise. I must say though I never drove it with economy in mind and didn't always pay super close attention to motorway speed limits. :o

Your car sounds great, and that mpg figure you quoted is around the same as I used to get in a brand new Mk IV Golf TDI 130! :)

What's the extra-urban MPG figure given in the handbook?

Nudging 40 mpg seems incredible, are you sure you filled it up to the brim again and that the distance covered is accurate?

Without wanting to rain on your parade I suspect you have short filled the tank on the second fill compared to the first fill.

Just keep a spreadsheet and let us know how you get on.

Seems very good ....

My CRX with variable valve timing used to only just beat that on a run ( if driven like a vicar would ) and that was only 1.6 litre ....

I filled the tank right to the brim both times.

I will do the same next time i take it on a long run.

The mileage was accurate as I noted down the readings each time I filled up.

Where is the tank mounted, if behind the back seats expect there to be about a 5 litre or so discrepancy on filling due to any slope of the forcourt.

Err 38MPG on a 300E, sorry mate but thats impossible... were you on the back of a tow truck?!

Oh, yeah. Forgot about breaking down at Northampton and being recovered to Sheffield from there maybe.. :D

lol, only messing about! but seriosly, even the diesels of that vintage struggled to get 40MPG....

the spreadsheet of my 560SEC is currently showing an average of 19.6MPG!

Thats sounds incredible, outof my 300e getting average 16-17 round town, 30-35 motorways, depends on mood im in:rolleyes:

I'm am totally serious.

As far as I can remember, both forecourts were level!

I topped up the car in Sunbury to the brim yesterday with Shell optimax (102.9p a litre! ) then drove to Sheffield.

This morning i went to the petrol station about a mile away an topped it right up again, re-pressing the nozzle a couple of times as yesterday to make sure it was as full as I could get it.

I filled up with 20.53 litres and had driven 175 miles since my last top up which gives an average of 38.75mpg doesn't it?

If I'm wrong then I'm wrong.

i will try again the next time I take it on a long run.

It must be remembered that I didn't hammer the car very much at all.

I drove at speeds between 65 and 70mph generally, sometimes going up to 75mph and even 80mph.

KJ
I took it very easy which was very, very difficult!

My 320e has just given me 440 miles on a full tank yesterday, this mainly included town driving with 2 motorway trips, one to brighton and the other one to Crowborough in Sussex but mind you it took almost 86 litres to fill the tank up. Was the 124 ever available with a 90 litre tank?

Not doubting you - but I agree it seems a mile too high. Mrs. Gollom gets mid 20's and IBW reckons the engine is especially well tuned.

Wish it DID get as much as yours!

I would see how you get on over a longer period..... I dont want to sound patronising but something is wrong somewhere..

You have the big tank on your car. Normal size is 70 litres of which 9 of those litres are the reserve.

I always try (and sometimes succeed) to get 400 miles from a tank of 70 litres
