Can autofolding of mirrors be achieved. I have a w203 and was wondering if I could set the car up so when the doors are locked they close and when it is unlocked they fold out?

Can this be done, if so, will MB need to do it?

Thanks

R2d2 has done this on a how to . Its on a 202 so it must be pretty close. :bannana: :bannana:

Its more complecated than that it needs to be the latest model and still requires some advanced coding using a star system.

see this thread from MIRO

R2D2s mod was just to fit folding mirrors to a 202 with non-folding mirrors - there was no automation with lock / unlock etc. (still an admirable feat !!) I expect its a different kettle of fish with the 203 - as fuzzer says, it can be coded, given the right knowledge of star diagnostics - probably less messy though, if you have the right model of 203 !

The auto-fold function is as follows,

2005 kit for folding mirrors
====================
- 2005 front fuse box
- 2005 door modules
- folding mirror frames (prefer with memory and dimming both sides)
- new light switch

- advanced programming of cluster, front SAM and door modules

Even if you dont have the newer cluster with more menu options you can still have auto folding. My 2000 W203 has autofolding but no control menu is visible.

If you include the memory seat version in the mirrors you can now also programme the left side to dip on reverse.

So how can you tell if all this stuff is fitted? I've got an Oct 2004 registered (facelift) W203 so I assume that's a 2005 model, but there isn't a setting to autofold the mirrors. I often have to park kerb-side and it's a huge pain for me. I can't pre-fold the mirrors because I then can't see to get out of the car, but the street is narrow and they really need to be folded in, but they don't seem to like being pushed to the fold position from outside.

If you have a facelifted W203 (2005 model), your dealer should be able to reprogram the car to enable auto folding when locking the car... They need to reprogram in three different menus.

All 2006 cars have menu functions in the car which the dealer can easily activate. This didnt become apparent till some time in 2005 for the W203.

Suddenly it was common and easy to activate. For cars built in 2004 there was still the problem that the front SAM (fusebox) didnt have the menu.

It just happens that 2005 parts (and later) were the first really easy modules to setup at a dealer. When I had one 2003 door module on the right and one 2005 door module on the left it was very clear that the left side auto-folded and the right side didnt. This was with a 2005 SAM.

Even cars built late 2004 couldn't do it with the newest door modules and cluster settings activated. One example is your good customer in Australia called Mike. He has that problem.

For people with older clusters the work needs to be done by Steve since there is no activation menu in the W203 cluster to tell the SAM what to do. So it really depends on so many factors but is certainly much easier in 2005 and later.

Hi Nigel,

My folding mirror install replaced the standard mirrors with the folding ones, installed the loom, power supply and switch but didnt fold them on locking.

I dont think it is possible to do auto folding on a w202.

Glad you liked the install though!

Thank you, Miro, for the additional info. I know about the 2005 SAMs and that those are needed in pre 2005 models to make the auto folding mirrors work, but figured they would already be in the late 2004 facelfited models. Appearantly not. :o

Sorry team - please clarify

I thought from aforementioned forum that all W203's needed replcement mirror bits. Do I now think that is not needed on a '06 model - just the programming? And if so does anyone have the stardiagnose kit?

It was suggested that you could tap the closure-signal on the sunroof (esp if you don't have one) when locking the car to fold the mirrors in too. I never bothered to investigate this though, I'm sure it could be done with an aftermarket alarm system.

Since my C180 classic only came with brakes, a go pedal and a steering wheel i have added all of my options and decoded the problems as I went.

Much easier on a 2006. Its all in place if you have the right mirrors.

Oh well, thanks for trying. I really can't believe the mirrors don't auto fold - I knew they did on E Class so it never occured to me they wouldn't on C.

Hmm at £90 per hour assuming they know how to do it!
Yeah, well... hooking up a car to Star does cost money. Especially knowing that the SDS software needs to be upgraded on a regular base. And believe me, those upgrades are not cheap, either. :( But GPB 90 is quite a lot, I agree.
