Enabling CarPlay/Android Auto

My S212 has COMAND 5*1 with the latest firmware (so has the CarPlay volume option in the dealer menu).

Has anyone had any luck enabling CarPlay/AA with eBay/Amazon dongles that cost around 30 quid? I've read accounts from some who have been able to do it using a dongle that costs £155 from eBay but obviously I'd rather not pay that if I don't need to. Unfortunately, I don't live near ComandOnline or would just have used them to get it done officially.

It’s worth the trip to have it done properly.
I have visited them twice around 3 hours each way depending on traffic.

They mostly use genuine Mercedes parts and can update the Mercedes database.

I would worry about anything cheap may trash Comand.
