engine ecu swap questions

Can a E280/E320 ECU be flashed to copy the ECU data from a 1995 C36 using HFM? If so, this should be plug & play and still retain my original engine loom?

If I use the 280 ECU on the 36 engine, will this limit the 36's engine power to 197bhp as per the 2.8 M104? Or limit it to 220bhp as the 280/320 use the same ECU? Or is there a difference between the 280 and 320 ECU which doesn't make them the same?

Just need this bit cleared up.

Thanks

Hi,
Not sure about copying the data over, but I have never heard of it being done other than a re-mapp which just puts a generic mapp on it. One option would be to would run the engine on your original ECU,and get a custom ECU mapp put on it. Can you not use the 36 ECU and loom? As these ECU's are not coded to chassis, so should be possible.
I,m running my AMG with the 55 engine with the 43 ECU at the moment, but when I get enough money together I will pay someone to mapp my car, this would involve utilising a rolling road and many power runs and tweaking of the mapp, though this will potentially be expensive, I see it as the only way I can get it done being as the later cars have their ECU's coded to chassis.

Cheers Andy, thing is I don't have a C36 donor car to pull the loom and ECU from, I'm actually in the process of trying to obtain just the 36 engine. So the only option I will have is to run it from my existing loom and ECU. My current HG is leaking pretty bad, so the cost of getting that done would be similar to having all this put in! Which ever way I look at it, I need a new wiring loom anyway as mine is now shot.

Interesting on the chassis coding of the ECU, I presume you are talking about the 1995 C36 running on HFM fuel management?

The coding I was on about was the fact the later cars with EIS the ECU's cannot be swapped to another vehicle as the ECU is coded to other equipment on the car in my case the EIS, steering lock, key, and PSE Pump (possibly more), so if for instance i needed a new ECU and i managed to source a second hand one it would be no good to me unless it came with all the above items as well.

Another arising question.. the 36 engine seems to be from a 1997 W210. (forget the ECU and loom as I'm talking just about the engine itself)

Is there an actual difference between a 1997 W210 36 engine compared to a 1995 C36 engine? Or are they exactly the same?

The engines are the same, but the ecu's are not.

In one of the threads where someone has done this conversion, they say that the EGR system is different. What is this EGR system?

EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation, but I was'nt aware that the 36 had that fitted.:dk:

I wasn't aware about this either, will have to cross reference the part numbers on EPC if it has it. Also, apparently the exhaust manifolds are slightly bigger on the 36 engine compared to the 28.

The exhaust manifolds are standard m104, no bigger than normal. I did compare them when I built my engine and could not see a difference.

The inlet trunking from air box to throttle body is bigger in places than a standard m104.

Ok that's good to know! Looks like I'm all set to go now, just need the engine!

If you get hold of an early c36 to use as a donor car , the job is alot easier.:thumb:

I have looked around to see whats available, but storage is a major issue at the moment so having a donor car is a no no. Im hoping my current HG will last until end of Feb, as I have 2 weeks off from work, so hopefully this is when I can do the conversion. If it goes on me or the wiring loom gives up before then, I'm screwed.

Get hold of this, it will help keep your head gasket from getting worse, and may even cure it.
