engine misfire 2003 C200K, can anyone help??

Glad it's sorted but did you find out where it was leaking from? The ATF shouldn't "used up" merely swirled around a bit :)

Truth is no. It did have a leak from the transmission soon after I bought it 5 + years ago, the leak was fixed (under MB warranty) but maybe it wasnt topped up, who knows. Doesn't seem to be a leak now though. I have no idea if ATF is checked at services, I've certainly never looked.

Note to self...get ATF checked..

I can't see how a missfire can be caused by low atf level.

I thinks thats the point, there was no misfire! I took my car to the team at Jays place to sort out a misfire (previous garage declared there was one but couldn't find out why). They duely searched and after checking everything compression (fine) injectors (fine) etc etc etc they concluded that there is no misfire and started looking elsewhere eventually looking at the ATF..Voila! (I had previously told them that this had already been checked...who knows). All in all it would probably have been found a whole lot quicker if I hadn't said anything ! so, I'm impressed by their perseverance and grateful that it was found before I ended up with a box of mashed metal.

To put this in context, I've had cars misfiring before and this is exactly what it felt like (this is my first auto though).

The loss of drive makes it feel like misfire but the main difference is misfire == revs drop and gearbox == revs rise.

If one of the mechanics had taken it for a drive they'd probably have spotted it. I asked MB to take mine for a test drive in order to diagnose a fault and the mileage had increased by only 0.7 miles! Not really enough to diagnose the fault IMHO as it required motorway speeds!

Oh joy!! confirmed no misfire, not just the gearbox oil level (although it probably contributed) but the lock up clutch at the back of the TC was knacked. Along with a few other bits an pieces in the gearbox.

Took it to Transmission Technology in Knowle he certainly knows his auto boxes. Told me what it probably was from my description, drove it for a few mins and confirmed that this is exactly what it was (which it was). Gave me an option to just fix TC bit (got it reconditioned..rather cheaper than an original) or to also look inside the box to see if anything else needed doing...needed seals, new friction surfaces and a 'sprag' on 2nd, whatever one of those is.

Now, its all cured for rather less than a completely new box...still not particularly cheap mind.

Waftmatic mode has now been re-engaged...
