Engine Oil - Diesel Particulate Filter ?

According to my display I needed to add 1 liter of engine oil. Quick read through the manual shows different oils for C220 cdi with and without the particulate filter. My local dealer said it didn't matter and sold me the Mobil 1, which seems to be for the engine without the filter.

On reading further, the manual states you can use this oil in an engine with the filter but then must have an oil change asap !!

I was told by another main dealer that the filter was a sales option when you purchase the car, (never noticed that ?), and said there should be a code 424, which apparantly I don't have.

Is this correct, I thought all the later diesels had the filter a standard?

Just want to make sure I don't need to go back for an oil change - I put in 1/2 liter and the reading is now ok.

Cheers

If it is an EU4 car with particulate filter the oil you need is something that conforms to MB229.31 or MB229.51 oil spec. These are low ash oils and get called something like "Emission System Protection"

No particulate filter MB229.3 or MB229.5 spec. Will be on the container

Thanks, I read that in the manual but how do I know if I have an EU4 car with particulate filter ?

lift the engine cover off and there is a black sticker showing what spec oil you shoud have if a filter is fitted. (picture of oil can and 229.31 or 229.51 written on it)

No sticker = no filter

Thanks

I got a print out today from the dealer as I never had a card in the service book and it's not on there as an option so I guess I'm ok with the oil they gave me.

I'll still have a peek under the cover though !

Does it just pull off ?

Cheers

I read somewhere a few weeks ago that particulate filters on MB's were only fitted as standard in certain countries, mostly central european. Mercedes would fit them to all cars at some point in the future as a standard feature, but this would take 2 or 3 years. The UK was one of the countries mentioned where the filters are not yet fitted as standard.
