Engine running temp

Hello ladies and gents,

I know I have asked this before, but didn't get a conclusive answer apart from the general consensus of changing the stat.
It is an E350 CDI BlueEfficiency with the 265 upgraded engine 61 plate.
Car on long trip or motorway trip for example, engine temp hovers at and just under 80.
Mercedes try and tell me this is normal, I am borderline certain it is not. General consensus and my gut feeling says stat is on its way out. Mercedes are not having that and do not want to do anything about it (car under approved used warranty).
Can someone with the same engine, wether it is a C, E, CLS etc please confirm what their temp sits at when driving around in the open. In town it can occasionally reach 90, but that is normal with stop and start. My old CLS320 CDI used to run at 90 no matter what.

Many thanks in advance

Given the possible inaccuracy of the temperature gauge, mine normally sits at ~80 degrees. - I've never really pushed it hard for an extended amount of time, so couldn't really say what the maximum it will go to is.

The T/stat should open and maintain top pipe temp to a steady 90 C.
If the temp is erratic or dropping below 72 C then it will interfere gen activities.
A live date output will show what the t/stat and top pipe conditions are actually doing & what's going on.
All the best

2011 E350 CDI Sport. Handbook states coolant temperature may rise to 120°C. There is no lower figure.
At this time of year the vehicle temperature gauge shows roughly 80/90 degrees.

A different Merc, I know, but my temp on a long drive is at or just below 80 and with the caravan on the back on a long trip just over 80. Always has been, so I would think was normal.

Thanks for the replies. I might get it on star while driving around. My local indie is on friendly terms with me due to having a CLS320 (chrysler era car) and I will get his opinion as well.
It is abnormal to me as every other car I have had gets to 90 and sticks there. In the hot weather this summer it was a case of going to 90 and sitting there no matter, but now with the colder days it is back to around 80 and slightly under.
If it is a failing stat I suppose I can wait till it gets to 70 before I def know there is something.
As there is a temp sensor next to the stat, could this be a culprit as well, or is it more likely the stat?

My 2010 350 Cdi BlueEfficiency hovers between 80-90 usually dropping to 80 on a long drive where there is plenty of cooler undisturbed air going through the rad.

The thermostat on that car should get to either 89ºc or 91ºc depending on the supplier.
It is a thermostat, it should keep your car at that temperature.

For a start, if you are at 80ºc you will be using more fuel as this is how the computer works out how rich it needs to be, also, if you don't get to 90ºc your DPF will not be able to do a regen, so it won't be long before it is blocked up and knackered.

If a 'stat is dropping from 90ºc it has had it. most tend to last 3-4 years, why they are not included in the service, especially now they are so important baffles me. The complete lack of understanding from dealerships baffles me more.

That is a fair point, and as much as it is annoying me, I fell I should not have to pay to sort it out considering the car comes with tier 1 warranty (at this point i think it is not worth the paper it is written on). All they say is book it in for diagnostics at £150 and we will take it from there.

Last time it was looked at, they came back to me and said it is all fine. What I believe they do is start the car, let it idle and plug it into star. That proved nothing as sitting at idle it will get up to 90 anyway.

As for the regen, not overly concerned about that. Had to abort one morning as I got to work and what I found out is that it restarts it once the engine temp is at 60.

A car idling will eventually over heat as there is little or no air going through the rad. Does you fan kick in when up to temperature?

Indeed it does. Definitely did in the hotter days where the temp was glued to 90 no matter what, which sort of proves my logic behind it anyway.
Even if by chance it meant to be between 80 and 100 (as Mercedes claim) I do not mind where it sits as long it gets there and stays there. I do not trust that fluctuation one bit. That to me is an indicator that something is wrong and the little so and so's do not want to admit to anything.

When I spoke to MB UK in MK they even had the cheek to advise me to book the car in for diagnostics before we proceed with anything else. At a modest cost £150. Like m**********r, the stat costs £130 from MB Newcastle's ebay store and my local indie can fit it in 30 mins for arguments sake. It will cost call it £160 all in and no agro, so why do I have to argue to MB to get anywhere?

A quick update for those interested. Went to the dealership today for them to look at another item on the list. Amongst that I was calm but firm about the situation with the temperature, whilst repeating the same things over and over so that they can understand it is not normal. Will be leaving the car with them for a few days when it goes in for a service in the beginning of next month.

Will update as I get some feedback, for now I wait.
