ESP and ABS no display car won't crank

Tried so many things, checked every fuse, cleaned checked wiring / ECU/ESP connectors. Swapped out another ESP ECU, still the same.
Friend scanned the car with decent Snap on Scanner and he says is getting no comms with the ABS or ESP.
From reading threads I am understanding the car will 'lock out' if the ABS is faulty and the ESP / EGS will also not register on the system or will show faults.

Car unmovable, will not start but only way to make it start is if you unplug the ESP ECU, then it will start but it will not go into drive or any other gear as is stuck in park.

Could it be ABS that is causing all of this, any ideas?
Also would STAR show what is going on? If so though would need to trailer it to garage to get it on STAR and you cannot move the thing as its stuck in Park!

Assuming this is a 722.6 transmission there is a manual release , in my 2006 C class pop the cup/coin holder out put a long screwdriver in the hole visible (or the tool supplied with the car) press it in and wiggle the shift lever until it goes into N.

At least thats what is shown in the owners manual. Might be a similar arrangement on yours

Thanks for that Pete, yes think that may also be the case with mine, so that could get me at least onto a towtruck (or scrap truck possibly!)
I have though possibly made some progress with it. I believe it is an ABS fault that in turn is locking the ESP and start authorisation out.

Am I right in thinking that the ABS will indeed affect the ESP module as if its not giving a reading then the car will not give drive authorisation?
Maybe best for me to check the ABS rings and connectors as a starting point?

I get a lot of warning messages when my battery is too low

Last time I had a ABS fault with no speed readings the car would still start and drive. To me it sounds more serious like a short in the loom?

What makes you think it's ABS?

Re : ABS, to be honest, kinda just guessing (and hoping) after reading threads (to go with the dozens I already read)!
I thought the ABS may lock out the ignition but as you say, probably not. I will have a look at the sensors anyway and maybe give them a clean whilst I am at it.

I did think of taking off K40 front fuse assembly and inspect that. I understand there is alot of wiring and connectors to it that possibly may have moisture or break.

How would I go about checking for a short in the loom?

Thanks for the help.

I would start by checking the car for power at the ECU connectors and any sign of damage.

I would also try scanning the car while running (disconnect to start and then plug back in). My w211 says no communication with the ABS unless it is running.

Yes, you could be right. I am going to take up the passenger foot well where I think the can C connector is located, I previously had the footwell up to swap out the suspension control module for another issue and am wondering if the wires or connectors may have got disturbed or something like this.

Is as you say, like something is not actually connected maybe and is causing a state of the car not giving drive authorisation or crank.

Inspected the CAN connectors and wiring in the passenger wiring loom, unplugged connectors, contact cleaned them to no avail.
Stumped, its going into a garage to be diagnosed in a few days.
As said it will crank and start if I unlplug the ESP fuse or connector but it will not go into gear. I tried swapping the ESP ECU with another and its the same.
Just wondering can the 13pin transmission connector cause a state of no start/crank?

Got it diagnosed, not sure of what it all means,
if anyone could help or have any ideas of where to go from here ? :-

Found out it is the ECU, opened it up and there was definite signs of moisture and likely shorting. We gently cleaned it with contact cleaner and soft tooth brush and dried it out. Re-Installed and fired up immediately! No more error codes.

Sadly when I drove it it reverted back to the non start state, which suggests there is most likely more serious problems on the ECU than I hoped. Tried a 2nd clean and its still the same. So looks like the only option is to send off ECU and attempt to get it repaired.
Anyone know of a good place to do this?

This company is often recommended.
