I had the end piece of my left front spring break off yesterday so am looking at getting both front springs replaced.
I have been told the Mercedes book time is approx 4.5 hours labour plus cost of parts totaling north of £650. This was an independent dealer, so imagine MB would cost more.
The car is the Sport version so I will be replacing like with like.
Is this a reasonable cost?
Thanks

I have had the springs replaced on my W211 Sport last year

The springs were around £65 each from Mercedes and my MB specialist charged an hour and a half labour (@ £70 p/h) plus VAT to change both front springs.

Thanks - that makes my quoted price rather steep then.

Looks like you got the 'we do not like replacing mercedes springs' price.

A mercedes indy local to me changed a spring on my w201 in 15 minutes flat because he has the correct KLANN tool for the job. That expensive tool is probably not even required on a w212 (simple macpherson strut?).

Thanks - My local specialist used for servicing says he can do it in around 1hr per side plus an extra 30mins for any issues he may encounter. He did say the book time is 4.5hrs but wasn't sure why it's that long.
Looking at the springs it seems the MB parts are approx £100 per spring, so looking at a total of £440.
He'll also have a quick check of the rear sub frame for the dreaded rot.

Give Alex Crow in stowmarket a call if you get stuck, he will give you a honest no nonsense price.

Remember to get it aligned after.

Ok, that never occurred to me - would that be 4 wheels or just the fronts? My alignment is good, if my tyre wear is anything to go by. I used to have it done yearly @WIM but it never changed so I've not had it done for a few years now.

Always recommend to have it done after replacing springs. Ask WIM their advice

Yeah i would say an hour a side especially with a ramp and air tools.

I can almost do that on the drive in an hour. 4.5hrs remember the Mercedes Technician will have to look at the computer how to do it. That takes time.

Another rip off indie.

Any recommendations for 4 wheel alignment in Essex - preferably around Colchester?

A very good mb indie

Thanks, I've got a chap to do servicing repairs etc now, just looking for wheel alignment as my previous place is just too far now.

Whilst extra time equates to a larger bill, having done lots and lots of DIY on cars I am quite aware there is more than one way to do a job.

Quicker means, rush, smash ball joints off, use a blow torch on stubborn nuts and bolts, slam it back together without cleaning and without correctly torquing. When I do work on my own cars ball joints are separated with penetrating oil and appropriate force, all the parts are unbolted rather than bent out of the way, mating surfaces are cleaned, bolts are torqued correctly. It takes me longer than it could.

I'm always surprised when someone is happy a service took 30 mins. How good a job did the garage do? Did they really check everything? Did they drain all the oil?

I'd rather pay a trusted garage to do a proper job (if I had to use a garage) and charge me for the actual labour it took.

On my own C63 with full MB history prior to my ownership there were broken clips, badly refitted parts, broken connectors - all because someone rushed the job.

If you want cheap try KwikFit....

It sounds like the indi uses MB book times for jobs - which is one approach to take. Some jobs take longer in practice, some can be done more quickly for a number of reasons - does not necessarily mean a lower quality job.

Had the job completed today plus tracking. Steering definitely feels lighter at low speeds - my steering had been noted as being quite heavy recently.

Has anyone found a useful link to show how to change the springs ? All Ive been able to find so far are threads like this that dont describe the job. Ive got the new springs and ive got some spring compressors and tools that wont break. Can anyone guide me please ?
