Commencing July 12, compulsory from Nov 12.

Touched upon on here before, it will be interesting to see what effect this has on the power of the brand.

The system uses measurables.

For example, if a ContiSport 3 rates the same as a Falken, which costs less, what will the punter do?

Unless, of course, they are as representative as the "official" fuel consumption figures that manufacturers publicise ;).

Budget tyres already have the same speed ratings as equivalent mainstream brands, so I don't see why adding an energy efficiency rating will necessarily influence customers' choice between the two.

I reckon it might help weed out the worst of "ying tong yiddle i po" brands though. :thumb: Gotta start somewhere. Personally I would like to see a bit more "transparency" on the display of tyre Date of Manufacture on the sidewall that could be more easily seen and interpreted by the purchaser. Bet the Michelin Man wouldn't be too keen on that!

Week and year....what's difficult?:dk:

Its in small letters, you have to know where to look among all the other " numbers"and only makes sense if you know the interpretation of the code.

What does 3306 mean to the average punter compared to Date of Manufacture 19/08/2006

For the "cognoscenti" on the forum its simple but to the vast majority of the motoring population I reckon it remains one of life's mysteries. :dk:

Better still, how about a "fit by" date? I'm guessing that budget compounds have a shorter shelf life than the mainstream ones.

I'll be interested in the noise rating system.

If the data were independently produced and gave a level playing field I think it's a good thing.

Whilst I don't like having to produce EPC's for property, they do, at least, provide useful comparable info.

Driving remains one of life's mysteries for most on the road these days!

Sadly 80% of those on the road only notice when they are informed they are bald / flat.. the remaining 20 do care... and usually buy decent tyres in the first place.

Agreed - I suspect the data will only be useful to the 20%.

Clearly, amongst that group there is a thirst for knowledge, as the many tyre threads on here show.

One of the recurring themes on here is "am I paying a premium price for a brand - why should I buy Continentals when Khumo's are the same but cheaper"?

If this went some way to addressing that with quantitative data then...........

Is the date in European or American format?

Is it the 6th of March or the 3rd of June?

I think the week number eliminates the ambiguity.

AFAIK the system only refers to the week out of 52 of the year of manufacture.

Yes...and June 3rd would be week 23. You assumed March 6th.

Is this relevant? Only the tyre manufacturer needs to know which date falls into which week. The DOT system has 52 weeks in the code, it doesn't need to deal with which way somebody writes month/day day/month.

Of course its relevant (post 6)...the discussion was about whether the date on the tyre should be in weeks/year. Or day month year. So 12/1/2012 could either be 12th January (0312) or 1st December (4912).
