What are peoples thoughts on stretched tyres on rims (euro look). I like the look of them just wondered what others thoughts were. I was thinking of trying it on the 500 ??.

Tacky? Sorry just not for me, I'd rather run with tyres that are the correct size.

OK for show cars if you like that sort of thing. But there must be a large question mark over their safety.

Sadly, it's been around long enough to clearly not be. The Europeans have been doing it for quite some years now.

It always makes me cringe when i see them. It just looks so wrong and I imagine the tyre popping off the rim at the first corner.

Really not a fan to say the least.

Do they?

I've had a tyre fall off the rim. It's not funny.

It's been popular on the customisation scene there for years. I wouldn't want to drive with any sort of "spirit" on them.

I'm not keen on it myself, I've always chosen performance over style, lighter wheels of suitable sizes.

Clarification needed.

There was a recent discussion on the large American W201 fanciers site 190rev where someone was going for the 'Euro' look by removing both of his door mounted mirrors. Apart from, obviously, being a very cool look, reduced drag & improved fuel economy were cited as being some of the reasons for doing this.

When I told them that we Europeans long ago figured out that a mirror on each side was a good & helpful thing when driving I was called a 'hater'! :dk:

In light of this thread my question is, is 'Euro' code or yoof speak for stupid, ugly or dangerous when used in the context of car modification?

Looks sh1t in my opinion, certainly not beffitting of an MB.....

I think the "no mirrors" thing is more recent, taking things to a (il)logical extreme. Traditionally you always used to see smaller, smoother mirrors fitted, perhaps dropping to just one outside unit. As usual, you can guarantee someone will take it too far.

The Americans are a lesson in stupidity though, some of the fanboy idiocy over JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) items is legendary.

What wheel sizes are you talking here? Deep dish or flat face?

Stretched tyres sometimes is not that bad of a look IMO on deep dish wheels, not a good thing on flat face wheels though. They should not be too overstretched like putting 205/40's on a 10J wheel or 165/40's on a 7J wheel, as some guys do on their "dubs". Do your homework on different tyres as not every tyre will have the same stretching/strength properties compared to others, even if they are of the same size.

If you have a 500 SEC, this would be pretty much the limit...

Looks like an SEL to me.

Not to an insurance assessor though...

A payout dodge handed to them on a plate.

Anyway, I'm in the 'they look s41t' camp. They just look to me like you can't afford the proper tyres.

Showing my ignorance here. Had to resort to Google images to research stretched tyres........ Isn't t'interweb wonderful.

My god they look bl00dy awful. I am sure the tyre company techies must have kittens when they see them. A gift to insurance companies in the event of a prang as well.

PS - a search for stretched rubber brought up some very educational images as well:D

This 235/40-18 is on the correct 8J rim.

A wider tyre/rim will /not/ fit in this wheel arch (and turn).

The one that fell off my rim was on my old Volvo245, the *&^ocks had fitted van tyres.
Had there been any damage they would have been liable. The reputable shop that replaced them did report them to trading standards. That alone should scare off fitters tempted to do Euros.
