Exhaust problem. Clk 320

I called them and they were sooooo helpful and, with a price of 239 pounds per cat all inclusive of vat and fitting, I was grinning like the Cheshire Cat when we were talking. Until the bit where she said they didn't post them out and only did a supply & fit service. Its wimes like that where West-Midlands and East Scotland seem quite far apart!

Back to the drawing board.

Take a weekend break for two and enjoy yourself, they do it while you wait

Have a look at my thread HERE. Should be of some help for you. :)

Cheers. I have booked the car into a garage workshop for monday morning to have the inner bits of the cat taken out. The guy did sound sceptical mind you but will speak to me when I tuen up on monday. Did you do both and if so is that because they were both broken or because its better to do both?

They are both so close together its hard to tell which one is at fault, I did both

Update for anyone interested.
I took the car to my local workshop in the village yesterday. Both cats were opened up, emptied of broken ceramic stuff and then welded back together again. The MOT probe then went up exhaust as a test and was a comfortable pass. This morning I went a step further and went to one of the performance tuning & exhaust specialists and got them to fit a more free flowing customised s/s exhaust system with reduced silencing. Gives a much beefier growl note to the exhaust noise without being yob like. Just back from the village after another MOT probe and alls well. No more rattle anyhow!!

Thanks to all for the advice.

Thanks for the update. Any pics of the new exhaust? How much did the exhaust cost, if you don't mind me asking?

Just a footnote on this successful outcome, my dam CAT always rattled in town on a busy day when you had to crawl through it, never on the open road or on a quite day, It was as though the CAT new

Will take a closer look at it tomorrow and post a pic. Total cost for the system was 400 quid. I think that was a good deal (I hope so anyhow!!) but didnt really look into other places. Recently they have also fitted the Lotus motorsport Stage 2 exhaust to the Elise, they did fitted the decat test pipes to the F355 Tubi and also did the decat to the exige sports exhaust. If they haven't given me a "good customer" discount then I will have a hissy fit :)

Don't forget to tell your insurer about the exhaust mods ... just in case.

Couple of quick pics. Ground was too wet to get up close and personal underneath tho :(
It is branded a Powerflow System. The tailpipe is perhaps a bit bigger than before but the back boxes are a good bit smaller. Certainly gives a more noticeable Growl under decent acceleration but not in a chav like manner and certainly isn't intrusive. Looking at how I thought this might end up when the rattling started a couple of weeks ago (mega bucks for merc parts only to retain the status quo) I am fairly chuffed with the outcome. Thanks for the advice.

Just wanted to say thanks for a very useful post, I have the same car with 54k miles on the clock, as yet I have no issue with the exhaust, but when/if I do I know what my options are.

I am under full MB warranty for another 10 months which in theory covers everything apart from tyres and pads, does anybody know whether I would be correct in thinking that this problem would be covered if it were to happen in the warranty period?

It even included tyres (punctures) when I had Tier 1 on my R129!

Pretty sure cats would be included.

Just resurrecting this post for an update:

My CLK had its MOT today and passed the emissions test with no issues so obviously confirms that removal of the 2 cats is an option for anyone in the same situation. The deeper exhaust growl is pretty cool too :)
