F1 2019

Fantastic performance from Norris on his debut. I think he's matched the team's expectation/target for Alonso to achieve 8th on quali. That makes Norris, extremely good value for money.

Hope he shines as a new superstar going forward.

Also great to Verstappen ahead of a Ferrari. That must be such a breakthrough for Honda to feel they can now play with the big boys.

I also wondered if it was a 'big bang' engine with cylinders firing in pairs. Again, probably not because I've not heard anybody say anything. It does sound odd at times though.

This though is on topic and got me wondering that you may have hit on something, Traction is always an issue in F1 so maybe 'big bang' is being deployed now they don't have traction control. Paradoxically, bike GP racing where it originated (or was it WSB?) now permit TC (or so I heard) and wouldn't have any need for it. Honda, of all those involved in F1, would have the closest connection to bike GP racing and its technology.

Back to today. Ferrari 0.7s off the pace. Surprising and disappointing. Gasly didn't look to good either. Lando Norris did though.
More positively: I never watched the doc on Billy Monger (but was aware of him and his circumstance) - but he won me over with his Toto interview. Class act.
Less impressive: Ben Edwards' arithmetic. 1m20.59s is not 1m20.5s it is 1m20.6s. Pretty basic stuff to get wrong.
Yes, you've guessed - I'm reliant on Channel 4 for coverage.

Japan has unfortunately to date not been able to produce a really top driver, so unless they do....

A fact attributed to the more collegiate culture in Japan. More team work that top dog ethic.

Well done MB thats laid all the prancing horses are faster this season to rest, lots of good things happening in this qualifying,I was pleased with the HAAS that car handles well it might need a little more power but a good start for them.

I wonder if Ricciardo and Verstappen will still be crashing into each other this year??? :wallbash::D

C4 showed only a bit of the start and end of Q3. I'm guessing the new highlights package they have is more cut down than last year.

Red Bull and MV were hardly mentioned after Q3.

For all the talk about Mercedes and Ferrari I think that MV's qualifying position with Honda power was the most significant factor after any talk about MB.

BM looks like he has some potential - I thought the Toto interview looked and felt like a schoolkid doing a day out at the MB factory and getting an interview with the boss. The LN interview was better and felt like he was leading it as opposed to be indulged by an older adult.

That's Sky. They have limited track time to no more than 50% of Ch 4's program.

Not impressed with how Sky are marginalising F1 coverage. We've had Sky F1 since it came out and the coverage is excellent, but IMHO it's not in the best long term interest of F1 for Sky to reduce free to air coverage the way they have.

Lewis was 7 tenths ahead last year too but lost the race. Let's hope the strategy doesn't let him down if he's in the same position this time around. McLaren did well getting into Q3 although Sainz was a bit unlucky. Renault are probably the most disappointed with their performance

Not as disappointed as Williams. 1.3 and 3 seconds behind the 18th placed car doesn't bode well for the whole season.
At least Renault got one car powered by their engine into the top 10 with Norris.

It was an interesting race at times, although whoever was in charge of the cameras should have stopped focusing on the mid field runners as there was other action going on in other places at times that would have been better to watch. IMO of course.

VB was in a league of his own. Great result for him.

VB was in a class of his own today. Hooked it up perfectly at the start and didn't put a wheel wrong. Top drive. Lewis for a change didn't have a face like a smacked rear end and was reasonably generous with his comments. Max drove really well too, great result for RB Honda. Disappointing if not surprising that Ferrari felt the need to dish out team orders in race one.

Yeah, the Ferrari team orders this early on in the season wasn't something I wanted to hear, although I don't understand why Ferrari didn't pit CL for new tyres and gain an extra point for the fastest lap seen as he couldn't overtake Seb. Seemed odd to me.

I enjoyed the onboard shots of young Lando. He looked calm & very composed/focused. Long may that continue. The car looked to be well balanced.

I wonder if that could have made the difference between the 2 Mercs. I'm not trying to take anything away from VB's win but it might explain why he literally left LH and the rest of the grid in his dust. To be that good so early on is a great achievement.

I've just been listening to Horner and in previous years enjoyed his chats before, during and after the race. Is it just me or he has he turned to dross and now only talk about how wonderful and spectacular MV?
