F1 2019

I do like the idea of pulling in the team mate of a championship contender during the last few laps, slapping a new set of mega soft tyres on and taking the fastest laps so that the rival can't get that extra point......
Everybody will see that as extremely fair and shouldn't confuse Joe public anymore than they are already:dk::rolleyes:

Good tactic unless said driver is running just behind his team mate and a pit stop for fresh rubber puts their rival team in a better points scoring position than if they stay out. Might be interesting for some of the teams lower down the grid that have no chance of a win but could get a fastest lap point in the later stages of a race when the fuel load has diminished.

Apparently they will have to finish in the top ten to score the fastest lap point

This is to stop someone at the back of the field who has nothing to lose doing this (like Alonso did many times). Could help one of the top six who have had say a bad qualy or race and are in the lower point scoring positions to gain an extra point

When I first started in motorsport I got a few comments like "That happens at the weekends, what are you going to do in the week?"

Well I like F1 but we have two top teams followed by two teams that if they get things right can win,and then three teams who were some years ago able to mount a F1 campaign and get a fair number of points but have slipped way back from I suppose making poor decisions ,after that we have the remainder a couple have made some progress, but the fact remains that the top two can start at the back of the grid and win the race, that is the beginning of the end for F1,it negates all the drama of qualifying, which is half the F1 package ruined, will a extra point for the fastest lap only if you are in the top 10 on the grid make a difference,I do not think so,the owners of F1 are allowing more street races,in the hope it will make it all more interesting again not sure that will help.

I wonder how the car and track designs would change if there were 'reverse grids' for at least the top ten finishers in the previous race, BTCC-style.

Might encourage overtaking, but kill qualifying, of course......

Qualifying generally indicates the ultimate pace that is in the car. So, if on a given weekend one of the faster teams has a problem and ends up staring from the back, they still have an inherently faster car than those in front of them. So instead of managing their race pace to suit the chasing pack, they can use a different race strategy that utilises the capabilities of the car to chase down the slower cars ahead. This comes at a price though and can reduce the 'life' of the driveline or other components that may subsequently need to be changed early. Another issue is whether they can deliver a faster race pace without exceeding the fuel allocation or flow rate.

So, a Ferrari or Mercedes or Red Bull starting out of position at the back of the field can come back into contention because they have a faster car than some of the others. They also arguably have more talented drivers that can exploit the faster car. Lewis and Daniel for example have managed wins or strong podiums from the back, while Seb has struggled to get a decent result if he isn't on or near the from at the start.

We won't know, though of course we can speculate with reasonable certainty, who will have the fastest cars this season until we get into qualifying this weekend.

As for street races, I think they do add some interest from a TV spectator perspective. Must be a bit of nightmare from a car setup viewpoint though, uneven road surfaces that are not clean or used for racing all year. And how the drivers wind themselves up to thread their way past the swimming pool at Monaco is beyond thinking about.

BTCC is glorified banger-car racing. Difficult to do that with an open-wheel formula...

I can't believe you think BTCC is 'glorified banger-car racing'!
Here are my two drivers in the Toyotas at the 1993 British GP support race.....

How pleased was I ?

^^chuffed to bits no doubt...:)

Looks like it is business as usual MB one two after second practice, seems the opposition are not as fast as they thought.

Ferrari must have something in hand.

Good to see Kimi looking competitive and very sad to see Williams 2 secs adrift of the rest
