Firmware update?

Hi,

Ive recent got a lovely W211 E320 cdi, which Im very impressed with so far. The Sat-Nav has some weird and wonderful routes though, and also some things on it are brilliant and better than a tom-tom (but some are really very poor!), the actual route guidance is iffy at best.

My system is a full display comand dvd based jobbie (2004).

Im wondering a few questions here so please bear with me...

1 - Can I update the Sat-nav disc and will this give me decent post code entry? At least better routes...
2 - Can I update the firmware on the head-unit itself?
3 - When I burn off an MP3 disc, it plays the first (approx) 10 songs then refuses to recognise any more songs. Ive burned extra discs, all the same (like it clogs up).

Thank guys for any answers you may have...

Theres a 'Model Year 2007' firmware update for COMAND, which can be applied and sorts out the early MP-3 issues, and gives you the ability to have Estimated Time of Arrival on the map display whilst navigating. This is applied by inserting a disk in the COMAND. Some dealers will sell you the disk. See comand aps FAQ on Mercedes Electronics upgrades, installation and retrofits for the part number.

There is a "early 2006" AGW firmware update which sorts out some radio issues and ensures traffic jams on the correct side of the road when using TMC. This has to be applied by the dealer, and so may be worth getting him to check your AGW has the latest version and apply the COMAND firmware update at the same time, possibly at same time as a service when he has the Star machine connected to you car already.

Do be aware that I have seen very early iPod kits misbehave after an upgrade, in that the update of the track info and phone info on the instrument cluster becomes "slow", and its because the early iPod kits don't seem to have enough processor power to do everything at the same time (I don't know what actually changed to cause this, but i suspect COMAND is sending more information for the iPod kit to process)

There is 2009/2010 map disk, which updates the firmware in the navigation processor and gives you the latest maps and TMC "routing" tables. More details here: Comand Online Ltd :: Mercedes Navigation Disks :: Comand APS Map DVD Europe 2009/2010 for E (W211), SL, SLK, Maybach, S (W220), CL (W215), CLS
The maps are different between different cars. Your car needs the maps with the green stripe on the box as seen above.

The 2009/2010 maps do not give you full postcode search only 5 digit (i.e "CT21 7" which then limits the amount of streets, making entry quicker but not perfect). I do not beleive that 7 digit postcode will ever be added to the older systems as Mercedes want you to buy a new car.

I hope that helps.
