I've just found a really useful iPhone / iPad app, Road Trip / Road Trip HD.
It's dead easy to use, has some neat built in statistics displays and graphs, you can import your existing consumption records, keep track of service costs, etc. and export all the data to a csv file for further analysis if you wish. The neat bit is that it uses Dropbox for synchronising across devices and for backup purposes. All in all the only thing I don't like is that even if you've bought it in one device format you have to pay full price for the other format version. Below are a few pic's now that I've loaded my copy with data. All in all, not bad for £2.99!

Rotate the iPhone to landscape and you get a few graphs, this is the Fuel Consumption graph which shows actual (the white trace) and what the car's Trip Computer recorded (the blue trace). The red line is the moving average:
