I have read a couple of times on this forum about MB giving free map updates for the first three years of ownership. Has anyone got a link to the MB website where it says this?

I can only find this COMAND APS multimedia and navigation system: Free map update for three years in 39 European countries | Daimler Global Media Site > Brands & Products > Mercedes-Benz Cars > Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars > Special Topics and this Mercedes-Benz UK - Overview - Communications which only refers to Comand Online.

I ask because our SLK is almost three years old and the dealer is saying it can only be done at time of service and because our service won't be due until November earliest, we would have to pay. This is MB policy, apparently.

I am waiting for a call from the service manager and would like to have the facts to back my request if anyone can help.

AFAIK this policy came in with the launch of the facelift W204(MY2011) and NTG4.5 rather than NTG4, and applies to all vehicles purchased after that time - namely you get 3 years of free Comand/satnav map updates from the time of purchase.

No doubt Richard/Comand will be along shortly to give you chapter and verse!

Your service manager does not like it because it ties up a service bay for (in the case of NTG4.5) 2 1/2 hours that is not chargeable!! Give him the option - do it now, just at the end of the 3 years, or a written guarantee that they will do it FOC when you have the car serviced in November (assuming you'll have it serviced by them...).

Thought your car was serviced every year from day of registration or assist which ever comes first , so your 3 years should be the third service unless you was very late having your services in the past ,,,, I have actually spoke to my Mercedes service man regarding the update after 3 years and it's £80 for the update , but takes all day !!!!! Crazy ,,,,, when is your car 3 years old ?

4th October. The wife only does 2000 miles a year and I believe it was serviced July 2013 by previous owner (according to salesman) or November 2013 (according to make-everything-up-as-you-go-along service agent).

As stared by chrishazle I'd ensure you get the free update when the service is needed and stipulate that you want it for free or can the get it done before or n the 4 th october , also you could get it serviced early :thumb:

I had the cartography updated when it became available, which didn't coincide with a service, on my previous W212 without any problems.

I don't remember there being anything written in any of the information I had with that car or my current W212 that suggested the cartography update could only be done in conjunction with a service. My guess is that your dealer doesn't want a bay tied up...

Just before your 3 year warranty expires (and also the free map updates), can't you ask them to generate a MAP pin for the latest available version so that at the next service (when the offer would have expired) you'll get the 2014 maps installed?

That will be next move. :thumb:

There was a thread about this some while back in which Richard posted that he was uncertain if a code could be successfully generated for a cartography release that didn't yet exist. Can't remember the outcome of that thread for certain, so best to search for it.

But surely it would work for the latest map version that is available (and I presume he doesn't have on the SLK)?

Yes, I believe that would work.

Thank to all for the advice; it was invaluable. I spoke to the Service Manager this morning, explained to him what his staff had told me and how that compares to what MB says. He immediately agreed to either update the maps during the first MoT or generate pin number to be used later. I left it to him so he has amended the job sheet for 1st October. It will be parked up, attached to a battery charger while the update is done, apparently.
It appears what the service reception 'meant' was that map updates where part of a service check/update rather than having to be done at time of service only. Mmmmmm. I didn't pursue the point.

Many thanks to all.

It is only valid for the first three years been already said.

However, unless you requested the update being carried out during the service, they will not do it.
Also, from experience, check the update has been actually done.
The last time my car went it, they lied about doing it, and only after logging the complaint with MB UK, the garage admitted they did not do it, and very quickly blamed it on a technician!!

It is why I love MB customer service,,,
