Front Tyres Worn at 5,000 miles (14 plate C63)

MB reported back, no issues with the car or it's alignment / camber etc.

Which now leaves me thinking they were low tread on the inner edge when I bought it and I obviously don't know how it's been driven for it's first 4,000 miles.

GC Motors are being really good, they are looking for their reports on what the car had when sold and seem like they are willing to help me out.

MB suggested replacing all 4 tyres, why I'd replace the rears I don't know as there's nothing wrong with them.

I'm concerned that if I swap for something else like Michelin Super Sports they'll end up in the same state in 5,000 miles.

This has got me thinking, the car i have just bought today has only got 5095 miles on the clock and i noticed the fronts are a different brand of tyre to the rears which i thought was unusual for a car with 5k on the clock, continentals on the rear and Yokohama on the front, am i right in thinking these cars came out of the Factory with contis fitted? If so i would expect the rears to need replacing before the fronts unless this cars geometry is out, car is a '62'

They came with Yoko's from factory iirc. I expect the rears have been replaced. 5k on a C63 for rears is about right if it has been driven hard!

I know I'll be fitting Michelin's next!

Mine had Contis on the front when I bought it, it had also worn the inner edge of the tyre quite badly too.

When I took it to MB for its service they checked the tracking (ATS, Kwikfit, National Tyres etc. couldn't do it due to the lack of available space in the wheel arches for their kit apparently), it was within limits but the chief mechanic said they all wear out the inners and suggested some new modified bolts for the lower arms.

They fitted these for the cost of the parts (around £15 from memory) and I've now driven the best part of 7000 miles on new Goodyear Asymmetric 2s with very little wear to the front tyres at all.

I found a local place who I didn't even know about, they build and race a whole variety of cars and have a laser alignment machine.

Car is going next week to be checked out, then adjusted if required and new front tyres fitted.

If they find it's out of alignment I'm not sure where to go with it, GC Motors claim the tyres had 5mm over the whole tread when they sold me the car, MB claim there is nothing wrong with it. I hope they do find it's out because I don't want to change the tyres in another 5k miles :(

The fronts (Yoko's) on my C63 had bad inner front wear after around 6000miles - I raised it with MB and they said everything was fine geometry wise and the tyres were still good but to me they looked well worn on the inner shoulder.

I changed to Pilot Super Sports on the front and monitored them - those wore as expected over the next 15000 miles with no problems.

Oh and pressures were always checked and correct.

When mine was laser aligned, MB said it was within limits for alignment, it was that the chief mechanic knew of the modded bolts that he suggested fitting them.

As I said, since having them fitted, there's no problem with front tyre wear at all.

15k miles, I hope I get that out of mine!!

I took all my cars after i bought them to Wheels in motion as non of them drove straight and they always did excelent job. I needed few test drives but at the end almost perfection achieved! They replaced bolts on CLS (£60 for bolt??!) was not cheap but 20k car deserved it.
But how surprised i was when i paid just few quid for complete geometry on my wifes VW Golf... :)
