hello again what a day im having !. I posted earlier today regarding my brakes seeming to have a lot of pedal travel so took the advice of the respondees and decided to go and get my new discs and pads. However , on my way to maidstone which involves a short run on the m2 i had to use the hard shoulder as i had a loud squeal from the front offside and vibration through the steering wheel and brake pedal.I nursed the car back home and have removed the front wheel to find that the front wheel bearing has collapsed ! I have removed the caliper, disc etc and am now at a loss what to do next. I really dont know whether i can simply renew the bearings or can get a new/re-con hub with bearings already installed .I would be grateful for any help on this , especially if somebody can tell me where to get the parts i need or if its likely to be main dealer terrtory

Get parts at ECP or a dealer. Unless the hub is damaged these bearings just fit in and are then finger tightened up.

thankyou for your reply . Just wondering if you knew how tightly the clamp thingy (sorry) should be as when i removed mine it had to be done with some force , involving a hammer !!!! .Think it had tightened with all the heat that was generated ,suffered brake fade too :( Also ecp dont list any hub/wheel bearings on the site so will give them a ring monday morning

Don't just fit the new bearing cage into the hub. You will have to renew the bearing taper as well. It drifts out and there is one for the front of the hub and one for the rear of the hub. Use the new seal supplied with the kit also.

thankyou Ian B , i have had a quick look about and think i am going to opt for complete new hubs and do the other side too while im at it. I have two questions though .Firstly as i think ive damaged the hub nut thingy too much will this be a main dealer part and secondly how tight should it be done up on re assembly ? Sorry to be a pain but being a mercedes novice i have a lot to learn. Finally on the actual stub axle should this be a smooth chamfered axle with the thread on the end ? mine seems to have an extra part at the end of the chamfered section and im not sure if its the inner race of the bearing that has welded itself to the shaft or if its supposed to be there

Might be an idea to post a picture of the axle as I don't want to post duff info. Some 124's have a phosper bronze spring in the end of the stub axle for radio suppression.

The inner race of the bearing , if a taper roller will have caged rollers attached to it .if you contact BRT Bearings in Ilford they will be able to supply / advise your nearest stockist,Beaings should be correctly torqued as per the manual - not "finger tight". Do not make the common mistake of over greasing the bearings , as overfill can lead to "churning" which causes the bearing to run too hot. BRT are on 0208 553 4117 and are the largest uk trade supplier of wheel bearings to oem specs.

just a quick update with todays findings. The extra piece that i mentioned in an earlier post was indeed the inner race of the outermost bearing. It had welded itself to the stub axle. After some careful grinding and some not so careful hammer and chiselling it has been removed. The problem now is that the bearing has not damaged the stub but i think has left some bits of itself on the stub ! (if that makes sense). Can i carefully file this away and hope all is well or would i be better of replacing the whole stub assembly too ? Also i need new split hub nuts can anyone tell me if they can be purchased seperately or is it likely to be main dealer only ? i have looked at wheel bearing kits but they dont appear to come with new hub nuts
