I'm well pleased at the moment so I though I would share my joy with you guys.

Went down to Brighton today for a freinds kids Christening, about 100mls each way, and my fuel consumption has shocked me. I managed to get an average for today of 42mpg :bannana: :bannana: Yesterday I got 38mpg overall :bannana: :bannana: The car has just had a service at 27,000mls and before it's service I was hard pushed to get 32-35mpg.
I have no idea what has happened for my fuel consumption to improve so dramatically as I'm still setting cruise at 88mph as I always have so I'm baffled but well pleased.

As I get older really sad things make me happy :D :D

Forgot to mention, I reckon I'll get 650mls out of this tankfull at this rate.

Is it more economical to use cruise control ? and what happens to the excess fuel when using the speed limiter and you give it a boot full?

The fuel consumption in our W211 220 CDI is shocking compared with out W210 220 CDI.

We used to easilly get 44mpg at 80 and now its dipped down to about 35  .

Same style of driving , same size of tyres , same load ....

Maybe its this new 150bhp engine.... Its a sad day when my petrol C180 Kompressor can out MPG a 220 CDI :O

My average over the last 2000 miles has been 36.5, and I really do drive the car hard at times. Maybe your's will get better with age!

Thats what the dealer was trying to say till we told them that the car had done 7k. There was silence and it was suggested it maybe the driving style.

hmm ..

My understanding is that there is no excess fuel as the car has throttle by wire. With the speed limiter set the ECU wont allow any more fuel into the engine regardless of accelerator position (until kickdown is reached).

I did suggest that your consumption would improve when the warmer weather came. No long warm up period at low mpg.

By the way is that your first service at 27000 mls?? Mine is due at 17000 and if I remember right Richards went to 19000.

Does sound like they have tweaked something. Recall reading that on some newer vehicles ECU settings get adjusted at some point over 15/20k miles to compensate for not being a new engine any more.

No it was his second I believe Bryan. Its strange, the first service was at 19K, but now its asking for a service every 10K miles. I've just had the second service at 30K and its saying 9K to go till the next service now.

It was the second service, the first was around 17,000 I think. Fuel consumption has certainly increased since the service but this may be partly down to the fact that I have done longish journeys but it still seems better.
I will keep an eye on it for the next few weeks.

My consumption jumped after the last service. The garage put some "Fortron Diesel system Additive" which is now approved by MB. It cleans out the injectors etc.

My E220 W211 (Auto) was doing about 40mpg, it jumped to 44-45mpg after having a dose of this and on a longer run on the motorway I have got 47mpg. It is still doing this 5K after the service.

They also use Castrol SLX engine oil which may help things.

Did they change the Oil type or add any of this cleaning additive?

A friend who runs a S320 said he got a real jump in consumption once the vehicle got to 35K miles. moved from 36mpg to 40 mpg plus. So it may be the time it takes for these engines to run in properly!

Somebody else mentioned about the additive yesterday but untill they send me the invoice I have no idea if they used any or not.

I went for a drive last night - and got an average of 40.5 mpg (28 miles - mixed moterway and urban ) Very happy with that!

Oh - this is a c180k compressor (2weeks old)!!

;) :D

The dealer has always put Castrol SLX in mine, but never any fuel additive that I'm aware of.

Found that having a service / oil change dramatically improves the fuel consumption figures - that's on all the cars I've had, diesel or petrol.

Can only think that its something to do with the engine wearing in and the fresh oil.

Clarky.
