Fuel economy first for Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz has set a new fuel economy record with its diesel-powered E320 CDi saloon.

Three standard cars were driven from Laredo, near the Mexican border in Texas, to Tallahassee in Florida - and each covered the 1,039 miles on a single tank of fuel.

Independent sypervisors sealed the 80-litre fuel tanks and verified an average fuel consumption rate of 59.46mpg at the end of the trip.

The record follows a previous reliability trial at a high-speed circuit in Laredo, where three E320s covered 100,000 problem-free miles.

There was a 4th car but it had crap MPG until they found 23 Mexicans in the boot trying to sneak over the border.

The 24hr record they recently acheived in the US was with the new V6 320CDI ;) A vehicle that is still not seen in the American showrooms!

I wonder if the new V6 features in this new record? (It is onlya 3ltr engine)

The records were set with the new V6 CDi engine.

The report doesn't give an average speed. I bet there was only the one cold start too.
Still twice as good as mine though.....
