Mercedes C180
Hi there

Can I ask if you can share some advice for a first time Mercedes owner please?

I have just purchased a 2003 Mercedes C180 Evolution which has covered 46k miles.

It is a truly beautiful car, but it is costing quite a bit on petrol to drive round.

I drive about 40 miles to work and back each day mainly upon motorways, so the trip computer advises about 45mpg.

To be honest I dont trust it, I think it is a liar :)

It feels like it is costing about £10 in petrol each day for this journey.

My previous car was a 2 litre diesel Golf, which cost me about £4 to make this journey each day. I knew the Merc would be more expensive to run, but not this much.

Can you share any advise upon checking the trip computer to see if it is lying to me and possible ways of improving fuel economy.

For Information, I am already driving like a granny on a Sunday ie. in 6th gear doing 56 mph :)

Any advise or guidance appreciated.

Brim the tank, log the mileage, drive until almost empty, brim the tank, log the mileage
Work out actual mpg.

They aren't usually too far out.

As to improving mpg - eliminate all junk in boot, roof racks, anticipate well ahead, don't use the brakes, have a really close shave each morning and a monumental dump.

£10 day, more like 30mpg. Not great, but not terrible.

I would say check your tyres as well - running them a bit higher on the PSI will reduce rolling resistance.

I borrowed a 2000/X C200K from my inde and it cost nearly as much per day as my car - and that wasn't driving like a granny - nor fast either!

Which means it is doing 20s combined. Could be something wrong with it mind.
