Fuel Matters

Hi Khamen

try 6.3 mpg on a trackday thats a range of 88 miles and goodwood is approx 2.5 miles

getting back to the pits is no problem but one needs to plan a little to get to the local petrol station

hey ho its a tough life being a racing driver:dk:

OK, I have just done two tankfuls with the Excellium fuel, first tank was 30.5 on the computer, second tank was 30.6 on the computer.

This is the worst two tanks I have had in this car.
Tried a second time in case it was driving style, but it was nearly exactly the same.
I usually get 33/34 with each tank and that is using Shell or Waitrose.

I thought I better calculate it manually too, and I managed to get exactly 70.5 litres in the tank and that was for 476 miles travelled, so think the computer is bang on if I have done my maths correctly?
476ml / (70.5l/4.54) = 30.67mpg

Started using Shell diesel again, regular stuff.

Manage 557 miles from the first tank for 71L and 551 miles on the second tank for 70.5 litres.

So that is 35.5mpg for each tank.

I'm about to pick up a 2012 C220 and am coming from a 2.0 TDI VW so am keen to see just how efficient the M-B unit is.

The VW's computer is showing an average of 40.4mpg from 8 miles when we picked it up to the 37,155 it is showing today (although I've a suspicion it might only use the last 10k miles to calculate overall MPG). I drive it fairly hard, the missus less so, and although it was significantly less efficient in the first 10-15k miles, nowadays I can easily get the trip to show 45+mpg on my swift 25 mile M1/M25 commute.

Now I know that on-board reckoning can be very optimistic, but when I've brimmed the tank over a few fill ups and checked the actual consumption it's not been too far out, maybe 5%, so reckon on a whole-life 38.5mpg, or about 9mpg less than the official combined figure.

Now the C220 has a 55mpg combined figure so if I can get anywhere near 9mpg less than that then I'll be happy, surprised even given the fact that the swept capacity is 7% greater.

Its important to note that the official figures are taken at 20 degrees.
Ive noticed with my previous passat and my c200 that initial is very poor in the current cold conditions. Comp. mpg shows only about 40 for the first 10 miles but then shows an average of over 50 after the next 20. My journey is mainly motorway and i drive at 70 mph. Passat averaged 52mpg for the 2 years I owned it compared with the official combined figure of 50. Hopefuly the merc will do the same and exceed combined figure of 57 but I cant see it happening yet. Early days as only had it 3 weeks and still tight at 9K miles.

Try pumping up your tyres by 5 psi It will ruin the ride possibly lead to uneven/accelerated tyre wear but help your fuel consumption figures-- its the "cheat" that many manufacturers now employ to achieve their latest car figures. And since I assume the purpose of this exercise is to reduce running costs raw fuel consumption comparisons are meaningless unless "factored" by the cost per litre of the fuel surely? :dk:

I have covered 22,000 miles over the past two years and the computer states 44.3 m/g. Mostly use Tesco with occassional Shell diesel.
