Fuel pricing - time to take that tough decision?

I read a report yesterday and at a price of £1 68.9 per ltr the government got a total of 89p per ltr, that is just pure greed and I very much doubt its hit its peak yet

The government are making a fortune from the increase in VAT they are receiving. A 40p increase in fuel is another 8p ish additional VAT, they could reduce the duty by the same amount to help out a little.
How much will you benefit by saving 100 GBP per 3 tanks?

It’s not really greedy though is it? It’s not like the UK Governement is deliberately profiting The only people who benefit from tax raised by the UK Government are the people or the UK and those in need who benefit from overseas aid.

It’s also not deliberate. It’s a consequence of a relatively very recent and unrelated event thousands of miles away which even three weeks ago was considered to be completely unthinkable and highly unlikely just over two weeks ago.

If it continues long term and is at risk of causing sustained harm to individuals, businesses and the UK at large then the Government will adjust it, but many will still pay a similar amount raised through other taxes over the fullness of time.

Highest I've seen today for standard fuel is 174.9 petrol and 184.9p for diesel on the A45
Local BP station was 172.9 for petrol and 182.9 for diesel

We have been here before. Petrol prices peaked at £1.40 in March 2013. Add 9 years of inflation to that and it would represent £1.75 today. So we are not in uncharted territory but no doubt we will be soon because back in 2013 oil was $118/barrel which we have already exceeded. There must be further fuel price rises in the pipeline as high crude prices feed through.

I filled up with diesel at £1.69.9 yesterday as I had a trip to Rye to see an elderly relative on her birthday. 170 miles round trip, 17p per mile. It’s not the end of the world is it? Train would have cost considerably more.

Crude oil prices go up: Forecourts raise their price the next day
Crude oil prices drop: Forecourts drop prices a fortnight later

Same usually happens when there in an increase in duty for fags and alcohol after a budget, the price increases that evening n some cases even though the stock they have has been bought at the cheaper rate

Also the Train would have been full of non Merc owners

10p change overnight at Costco!

14 days of carefully feeding the throttle I saw 268 miles for 1/2 a tank. Today I let rip on the turbo for a good few miles , fk it . 🤣🤣

Local Asda just passed £1.50 for E10 petrol.
1999 W202 C230k used to get 30mpg mixed driving.
2016 S205 C200SE currently 50mpg mixed driving.
1994 s124 E300D used to 45mpg maximum on a long frugal trans continental trip.
Changed cars before the pandemic by 6m.
Reminds self to pump up the tires.

I went from Gravesend (£hithole) to the centre of Bromley (pseudo posh) and the probably went past 10 petrol stations. The price at Gravesend Asda was £1.59 per litre and steadily rose each one I went past on the A21. In central Bromley the last on I went past was £1.97 a litre !!!! Go figure 🤷‍♂️
