Fuel pricing - time to take that tough decision?

Do we? European prices seem higher, apart from Spain and the Eastern European states.

Which EU countries do you think are cheaper?

France and Italy certainly aren’t cheaper. And, in general, Brits enjoy greater access to Supermarket petrol than is common across the EU.

If anything UK petrol prices seem to be subsidised by overpriced grocery stores and witless purchases of “snacks” and drinks

Yup - Mrs BTB drove 700 miles to Germany on Tuesday and commented that EU prices for fuel seemed about the same as the UK at the moment.

When I had a place in France, diesel was always quite a bit cheaper at supermarkets, but petrol seemed to be more

NB: A lot only took Disque Bleu back then which was a pain!!

Valid.

Which city in France?

I've just been talking to Mrs BTB in Germany - standard unleaded is currently 1.92 eur (£1.59) where she is, but apparently filling stations move the price up and down during the day by as much as 0.20 eur at a time?! The locals all have apps that alert them when the prices change, which sometimes results in queues. She's waiting to fill up for the return journey on Monday (700 miles), and has been advised to leave it till Sunday which is usually the cheapest day! As an aside on the way there she topped up at the last motorway services before the Eurotunnel at Folkestone, then did 461 miles to the South of Germany with 132 miles of range left on arrival. OBD shows 40.4 mpg - pretty happy with that for a reasonably powerful petrol car (C300 estate).

In the past fuel was always cheaper in Europe - we would fill up on arrival in France.

I'm just checking through the receipts from when I was in France the week before last. VPower98 was €2.059. With the £1=€1.2 exchange rate on my card and 0.5% commission, it cost £1.724/L

At a supermarket, the Super was €1.849 which as calculated above equates to £1.55 -- so about £0.10 or so less.

Where did I mention comparing prices to Europe? :dk:

Up in York again this morning and filled to the brim with E10 for £142.9 at Sainsburys. They must be making a loss to attract shoppers. Even Asda next door is £145.9 and they are usually cheaper than Sainsburys. Back home cheapest would be £152.9

I guess if you have a fully automated filling station (I didn't think this was allowed from a safety POV?) then you have no staff costs and can afford a lower margin.
Its allowed.....the recently opened ASDA in Selsey (Sussex) has a fully auto petrol station....looks odd with no shop or kiosk at all......Where will all those husbands get their wife's flowers when they forget their birthdays!!!?

I seem to recall a few years back in Switzerland there were certain filling stations which were closed on Sundays and/or Ruhetag, but you could still buy fuel at the automated pump.

French prices seem noticeably higher than they used to be, but

Apologies, when you said "Totally agree with this. Us Brits take tend take it on the chin when we get our pants pulled down." I thought you meant that the British were being ripped off on oil price rises relative to the rest of the world. Which we aren't

Our fuel prices are broadly the same as the rest of Europe. The only people who profiteer from oil price rises are the taxpayers who steal more than 100% of underlying cost of fuel in tax. (Every pound at the fuel pump being 44p for the cost of producing the stuff and 55p to the tax man)

Same in France some years back - but only took Carte Bleu (not Disque Bleu as I said in an earlier post!) which was a bugger if you were on fumes!

Just a decade ago Brits couldn't use Automated pumps overnight or Sunday in France because our cards couldn't be validated .

Now you can buy fresh, hot pizza (shudder) from automated vending machines in unattended French petrol stations.

Le monde est-il devenu fou?
