Hi guys,
Wondered if anyone has had any good or bad experiences with garage flooring - I have moved into a new property which has a bumpy concrete floor and wanted to improve it.

I have been thinking:
1) Polished concrete with sealant, maybe epoxy paint
2) Just painting it and hoping this will reduce the bumps
3) Snap-together plastic tiles which seems to be the easy option.

Any ideas guys/gals?

Speak to Malcolm (Television) - I believe he has some very nice Swedish flooring in his garage.

Just painting it will be a poor option as it will still be lumpy and the paint will wear on the bumps.

The best option listed is the epoxy layer, after that another one would be a levelling slurry or quarry tiles.

we used a self levelling pour thing which took out most of the bumpy bits...

the tiles would be quick and easy!

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread as I'd like to do something with my concrete garage floor too. There's some oil staining, which I think might make painting/coating difficult?

For a Mercedes it's got to be shag pile. And central heating :D

Getting it levelled first seems to be the best bet. Floor paint does tend to wear off, so perhaps epoxy paint might be better as a follow up.

I bought a very large tin (25L?) of garage floor paint - epoxy based.

Just wanted to stop the dust that always seems to come off concrete over time, seems to have worked fine for me. Good price from an ebay seller.

My son is a technical manager for a multi national paint company and I reverted back to him after my disastrous episodes of trying 2 pack epoxies etc. His advice:

Forget paints, even after curing, the paint will soften when a warm tyre is parked on it, the tyre and paint cool and the paint sticks to the tyre which is ripped off when the car is next moved.

Follow the posh car showrooms route and go for ceramic tiles, if laid correctly won’t break nor will they absorb oil etc.

Horrified at the thought of very high cost I never the less did the rounds of the various tile and DIY emporiums, and yes full price is a bit daunting but a fellow at Wickes came up trumps. Do the job yourself I was advised and buy deal end tiles at a fraction of the price from us. He even directed me to Topps Tiles to scrounge a CD of how to lay tiles.

My wife and I watched the CD several times and decided to take the plunge, buying the tiles from Wickes, tile cement, grout and tile cutter from Topps. After a couple of dry run layouts we got stuck in and we were surprised how well it went.

Two years later it still looks fine, and whilst the first few times cars were parked were a bit nerve racking, todate no broken tiles.

These tiles are Swedish, you can buy in the UK, my garage is 7 meters by 2.66 and the cost was £500 I have the tapered edge in black in the entrance and that is plugged to the floor, you can jack the car up on them, I use a piece of wood under the jack.

Under this I used self leveling screed (not a finish in itself) with a polythene membrane underneath also in blue to stop any rising damp

I used my old lounge carpet in mine, sorted out the bumps and warmer in winter if you feel the need to lie under your car every now and then ;)

we used a load of really heavy duty carpet tiles we picked up on Freecycle. Easy to replace the odd one if there is an accidental spill, nice enough to sit down on when working on the car and easy enough to lift out to get a jack/axle stand on the solid floor

Hi

When i built my garage i put in a power floated structural concrete floor and then used a 2 part epoxy clear sealer on it.
Gives a great finish, has worn through in a couple of places after 5 years but not badly. Really only where wheels spin as i cross the ridge of the 2 post ramp. Very easy to sweep clean and no staining whatsoever.

My car wont fit in my garage:(

I'd tile it, however I can't really talk as I don't have a garage

I painted my parents garage floor with garage floor paint, works very well, although tiles look much nicer.

I want a garage!

Just spoke to versatile, and the Domestic Garage tiles that they supply come in at £25 per square metre. So average single garage would be approx £450 and average double approx £800

They are the same cost as the Swedish tiles but the do not have the range of accessories

This company has been making them for the decks of liners for year and are a better product

One of the better snap together tile products is Race Deck from the USA.
I believe thay have U.K. distributors.
