Gear indicator on dashboard display? W211

Is it possible to get a W211 E-class to display the currently selected gear on the dash? I read suggestion that it was possible in some cars to have this displayed alongside either outside temperature or speed, but I'm sure it depends on model/year.

Any pointers? I've searched the forum as best I can to no avail.

I assume you're talking about a manual?

With autos, there is no option - you get gear selected on the cluster whether you like it or not!

No, I'm talking Auto, but what I'm looking for is "1,2,3,4,5" rather than just "D", if you see what I mean. Is that a possibility, or have I been smoking the wrong substances?

I recall messing about with my wifes car on the star one day and when i set it to a particular region, it was doing as you describe. However i cant recall what country id set it to..

Only if you have Manual mode..

2003 E320 CDI model (inline 6, 5-speed auto), so I assume not on this one then.

So only available with the 'flappy paddle' steering wheel gear selector buttons option...

I have the buttons on the wheel and it will only show the selected gears in manual mode (great round the lanes) In auto it just shows 'D' or the top gear limit if you've selected to limit the range. Shame as I would like to see the option too.
