Hello everyone,

This is my first post here, and I'm reaching out in hopes of finding a solution to a frustrating issue with my 2017 C220d (W205) featuring the 9-speed transmission.

When the engine is already warm and I start the car and go into drive, it initially engages in 1st gear but then immediately shifts to Neutral. This cycle repeats for 3 or 4 attempts before it finally clunks into 3rd gear. Once I’m in 3rd, I can drive normally through gears 3, 4, and 5.

Interestingly, when the car is cold, it operates perfectly, allowing me to access all 9 gears without any issues. However, if the engine warms up and I reverse, then switch back to drive, the problem resurfaces.

Occasionally, the engine management light activates during the process of clunking into 3rd gear. I’ve taken the car to two different garages for comprehensive diagnostics, but neither was able to identify any fault codes. I recently had a transmission service performed by PSC Autocentre, hoping that a transmission fluid change would resolve the issue, but unfortunately, it didn’t help.

One diagnostic result showed a fault code: B1F4500 - The starter battery has excessive resistance. I suspect this might only relate to starting the car and may not be related to the transmission problems.

Has anyone experienced similar issues or found a resolution? I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions to help resolve this gear shifting problem.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Were these garages Mercedes specialists? Did they use STAR/Xentry to diagnose?

Hi while driving less than 30 mph I put my w205 into neutral by mistake thinking that I was cancelling the indicator I stop a few yards later and put it back to drive and I am worried that I might have caused any damage to the auto transmission. It’s been changing gears as normal at the moment any help will be appreciated thx.

Firstly, change that battery. Use a genuine MB one too.

We have had this in the past and I'm sure it was a faulty gear selector. The guy you used may not have a Star (Xentry) diag machine and it will need one of those to further diagnose your issue.

W205 c220 diesel I was driving and put the car into neutral by mistake doing less than 30. Mph I stopped as soon as I realised a few yards later and I put the my car back into drive it’s fine know but not sure if I have caused any lasting damage. Not sure want you meant by new battery and star Xentry diagnostics

I doubt you have.

New battery is a new main battery.

Xentry is a MB specific diag equipment.

Change battery and and transmission reset. Check youtube video on how to do this.
