Gearbox failure on c240

Let us know how you get on Kiki
Just to give you an update, I rang Rims Engineering and they quoted me £1500 to repair the gearbox.
That is inline with the suggestions made by BlackC55.
I'll need to think about what I do next..that is alot of money to fix a 11 year old car.

Got to be worth looking for a secondhand box?

Maybe £300-500 plus fitting?

Hi Will,

I was getting figures of more towards £1000-£600 for G/B plus oils plus fitting plus VAT.

What's the reliability of doing this? My wife will be driving it and I need to ensure some reliability.I saw a thread where someone had changed his gearbox a number of times after fitting a 2nd hand box.

No reason a used gearbox should be any less reliable than one in any of the other thousands of C240/E240s out there.

I reckon if you hunt around, you should be able to pick up a good used box for £300/400ish, especially as W202s are worth so little these days.

Find a competent garage to swap it for you, shouldn't be more than a few hours labour.

Maybe around £750 in total would be a realistic repair cost - half the price of a reconditioned box.

Obviously there are merits of going the recon route - but it depends on your outlook. The car could be written off next month, or another major repair could arise! :o

Thanks for your advice Will.

I will have a further look at used boxes.
