Looking to get my gearbox serviced, 2006 E class 7speed auto.

Now, I can do basic servicing and have a good range of tools so was wondering if this is something that is fairly straight forward (DIY on the drive) or is it best left to the pros.

Any tips much appreciated..

Cheers for the link but I'm up in Cheshire, there are a couple on close Merc specialists with similar pricing, just wondered if its worth the effort of DIY..

I don't think it's worth the effort. On refilling, the oil level is critical.

Had mine done last week on a 5-speed box, cost £180.

I've done it before on an old 4 speed auto and the only difficult part is you have to get a decent amount of clearance under it to remove the sump for filter replacement and to drain the torque converter. Obviously it's going to be much easier on a ramp although I don't know exactly what's involved with the new auto's.

For me it would depend on what the filter and fluid costs and with old age I'm getting less inclined to crawl about underneath the car so the saving would have to be worth while. That said I'll do almost anything to avoid a visit to the dealer but if someone is offering a while you wait service that has to be a big plus.
