Gearbox Servicing

I am about to buy a 2007 E320CDi Sport which has a full MB history (I have the printout from Mercedes) The car has done 116K miles.

I noticed that there is no mention of a gearbox oil change in the history printout, is this normal? Would it have been done routinely as part of one of the services?

Should I be concerned if it has not been done?

Should I get it done if I buy the car?

Thanks!

Not necessarily, yes and yes.
Around £200 from a reputable indy and there are plenty of them on the forum.

What is the service interval for the gearbox, Mercedes telling me it would have been done as part of the routine servicing:confused:

If it's a 7G box then it should have been done at 37K and then every 40K but Merc say do it at 37K and never again! Forum members suggest every 40k so yes I'd get it done pal even if it's driving smoothly

Service manager just confirmed it should have been done at 31K or three years, whichever came sooner.

He also suggested as the car has done 116K to do it again about now:confused:

Worth getting done. When the car came out it possibly didn't have any service requirement for the gear box but experience has taught Mercs that this wasn't the case so now they do!

Look for a black tab on the dip stick, if its red its been done, question is when.

If it's the 7 speed box they don't have a dip-stick.

If it's the 5 speed then the the requirement to change the ATF came and went several times - if it's not called for on that car then it won't have been done.

The long and the short of it is that it is a good idea to get this done every 37k-40k miles or 3-4 years.

MB's service schedule changes are confusing given that the boxes are the same - only the service intervals changed from one year to another (and then changed back to what they used to be...)

The only relevance of the official ATF change intervals is for MB dealers who use it to wriggle their way out of carrying out an ATF change on Approved used cars. But regardless, it needs to be done.
