General Questions regarding a C208 320 V6

The 40 is a percentage of the width which is measured in mm - 225mm in this case.

Therefore the profile will be the same (or very close) between a 225/40 and 255/35.

Tyre sizes are stupid, one dimension in metric mm, one in inches and the other a percentage!

I see "said the blind man to the deaf woman" thanks for the explanation V12 again very helpful

To maintain the same overall radius of the wheel and tyre combination you need to change the aspect ratio (the tyre sidewall height expressed as a percentage of the tyre width)of the tyre when increasing or decreasing the wheel diameter.

See here for information on changing tyre sizes and compatible aspect ratio's etc:Tyre Size Calculator - Calculate Tyre Size - etyres

Hi Guys

Just went to view a 98 CLK 320 with 75000 miles. I got a few questions to ask, please if someone can help...

2. At idle the rpm needle fluctuates a little up and down...is this due to a new MAF requirement or is it normal?

3. When putting the gear on P or D with brake on, idle drops to ~500 rpm and slight shaking/vibration can be felt in car. Is this normal?

4. The dash has a 1".crack at the corner of front passenger dash airbag and the airbag seal is also broken at some areas. Apparently this is common in the w208 model...Would the crack propogate further and is it worth getting the 1" crack filled?

5. Also the steering felt a little hard...could this be due to wrong tyre setup or steering fluid etc??

Thanks guys

I think the tyre issue makes sense now - the tyre fitter has somehow fitted a 205 tyre to a 225 wheel and that they are 225 all around (i will get this confirmed).

Guys, could you please help me out on the above issues listed in the quote. Much appreciated.

Bump, please. I'm going to see it again today and hopefully buy it if the above are not serious issues.

Come on guys, I'm sure you have the answers...

I think you misunderstand wheel and tyre sizes, there is no such thing as a "225" wheel. Wheel s have a diameter and a width expressed as 7.5 inch, 8.5 inch etc, each wheel can accommodate a range of tyre widths. If you use a rim that is too wide for the tyre or too narrow hten the tyre will not fit correctly although it may seal and stay on it is not gong to seat correctly.

Idle fluctuation could anything and not necessarily the MAF, air leaks, old spark plugs or air filter could all contribute as could other things.

RPM dropping when in Drive is not unusual but it should still be smooth, if the idle speed is poorly controlled though this could cause some vibration but so could a gearbox problem, engine mounts etc.

If the dashboard is cracked and the "airbag seal" is damaged then I suggest that with the other issues you should walk away and find another car with fewer potentially expensive problems.

Thanks for your comments, just seen them.now. I have purchased the car already now. I will go to the tyre chap and get the correct tyres fitted.

The car is great and a genuine example of a CLK. I will get it checked on STAR to confirm the causes of rpm fluctuation and also the shaking in D. Apparently some other 320 petrol owners have reported shaking when in D, so I guess its a common issue in this engine...

About the crack, believe it or not, this is a common issue in the W208 model. I viewed two CLKs in one day and they both had cracks in the same locations. There is even a video on YouTube about filling in a dash crack (identical to the crack I have on the dash) in a W208 model.

Tyre sizes

My wife's 208 has :
front 235/35 19 inch X 8.5 rims
rear 265/30 19 inch x 9.5 rims

I put exactly the same on my 209. Looks wicked !
