GL/ML info needed - help

Having read the full thread, I think that if the front end of the R-Class doesn't bother you, it ticks every single box- 4 wheel drive/ low & fast/ plenty of internal space.
I'll be in a similar situation to yourself in about 3 months time and I have the same decisions to make.
If I was being sensible, the R320 CDi is the perfect vehicle for me- I have 3 children-so plenty of space. I like a bit of oomph- it has 224bhp. I sometimes need the benefit of 4 wheel drive, which it also has.
Tough decision, but good luck with whatever you choose.

I've done about 20k miles in the ML320 and it always returns 28mpg+, which I think is excellent given the dimensions and performance...

:thumb:

That is what I was thinking, somewhere between 26-28mpg average, compared with 35-36mpg average in the E320cdi.

Over the last 3000 miles and never doing a run of more that a few miles my wife's ML 320 has returned 30mpg despite the really cold weather. On a a run I get up to about 38mpg and if you really try you can get this:eek:

Now I am tempted to go and buy this ML280cdi, I shall blame you lot when I explain myself to the wife if I do. ;)

I currently have an E-class and am once again debating changing it for a Porsche Cayenne

I was going to question you about this possible choice, then I saw your signature :D

Cayenne is a seriously capable car, the new facelifted version is also a really, really nice place to be interior wise too.
I guess the problem is it is made by Porsche, if Mercedes or VW had launched it I am sure it would have got far more praise, in fact the Cayanne is a VW Toerag at heart, but with a much, much better set up that makes it feel alot more nimble than the Toerag.

The new interior makes a hell of a difference....

And I think the facelift exterior works well too....

I went to the launch of the new one and wow...I fell in love with it, especially the interior, its absolutely gorgeous and exactly to my taste, however for now it will have to be an older model.

The new Cajun looks interesting too...

I had a GL320CDI (08 plate) for two years, very capable car. If you have any questions just let me know, I'd be delighted to assist.

WHAT???

I have only got 46.4mpg from my E320cdi.

I am quite happy to get 37mpg from it as thats the combined statistic.

Ah! Well the figures are accurate, but I didn't say the ML was completley standard! The engine has been subject to a little digital enhancment (and 270bhp;)) and I did have some gravitational assistance for the figure in the photo!

6 miles, and 6 mins from a cold start in my E320 CDi will give around 20-25mpg. I only get near 40 on a really long run, and then that's driving like my testicles are under the throttle pedal.

Mine is a mere 221bhp and goes like the effing wind.

I had a CLS 350cdi on loan, not a grand edition but it seemed to have a fair edge on my car for midrange shove which made it feel like there was over 5000cc under there. I did not even attempt economy as sending the needle round the dial was much more fun, plus it was not mine.

However, with gravitational assistance, I raise you this.

Don't you just love the Alps....

I live in Norfolk!:o
The picture was taken on the A66 heading to Scotch Corner......

OP check out my thread earlier in the year. We ended up with a Q7, not my choice. I thought the GL was absolutely brilliant, a far better car than the 164 ML

Hi All,
