started car in the morning from work Tuesday morning so wasn't cold glow plug light come on then went off, started car and did take awhile to start 3/4 seconds glow plug light still on :( turned car off then on again and glow plug light went out but as I was driving light flashed approx every 20seconds and as the car got warmer the light styed off for longer. Now as I now have go a star machine plugged it in there was an error in the log with saying the glow plug control was faulty done a self test and that failed also (see photo's) tested the glow plugs from the plug using pin 6 as ground and then pins 1,2,3,4,7 and 8 for each glow plug each resistance was .47-.49 Ohms so I believe the glow plugs are ok? So I'm thinking it just the control bow that is faulty???

Well I had the same problem so put new module on as I got it cheap but the light still came on for a minute after start. Put new plugs in today and no light but the car was warm so hopefully in morning it's cured.

Well if it was just the glow plug unit then would change it with out going through my Tier 1 Warranty, But I have been told that the glow plugs wouldn't be changed under warranty as there a consumable but I may give them a call and ask

I had a warranty with Warrantywise and they covered the glow plugs.

Get the codes read....it will give you a clue as to which glow plug is causing the issue.

Also check the controller to see if it is the new version....the newer unit has a white backing.

my controller has a alloy back had been plug into star and does say that the control module is faulty as it failed the 'test' now i'm not sure if it can do a glow plug check when the module is u/s just rang Mercedes for a price of the part and to book it in and not picking up the phone lol.

Do a quick test on STAR, it will bring up fault codes under the engine.

Ok quick test shows this

The controller contains fusible links.....if the controller is showing up as faulty, you will not get a proper reading from the glow plugs.

The controller is very easy to replace.

The older type controller had fusible links, they newer one is electronic IIRC (someone will correct me) and is over twice the price!

The faults point to the control unit.

If you have a warranty, why not let them diagnose and replace it?

Booked in with them but not until the 12th August. Also have the problem with hesitation when under load (I thought it was gearbox valve body )but been told box changes well now thinking could be actuator or turbo vanes so gonna kill two birds with one stone so to speak and as it's still under 100,000miles don't count as wear and tear. Don't think there goanna do anything about it as been into them before with the same fault when under the std warranty not the extended one, Been looking at E350CDI :) seem the prices have dropped on the v6 compared to the 2.2

Its best to do the relay and all plugs... that way its all done.. Remember to get engine nice and warm before attempting to loosen glow plugs.

But Mercedes wont do that I don't expect :(

Warranty companies will only replace the faulty plug if the glowplugs are covered.

On mine, Warrantywise authorised the single glow plug and also the controller.

If you want them all done you will have to shell out yourself.....it costs between £100 - £150 from an Indy plus the glowplugs.

MB Newcastle via ebay do the glowplugs at a highly discounted price.

The glow plugs all measure .47-.49 ohms across all 6 so i would say there all good unless one is breaking down. Mercedes I expect will change the relay module then do a test on the glowplugs if any fail I expect they will be changed if they all seem ok then that's the end.

Good glow plug measure .01 ohms off the car. Mine had one gone which measures 14.9ohms with meter set at 200k.

.47 Ohms (meter set at 200Ohms) for each plug measuring from the control socket which does inc the loom must be that the plugs are ok. I'm just not sure if I have an updated control unit but it does have a metal back, and I cant see that all my plugs failed in 15hrs from stopping at work then in the morning starting it and the fault appears. Will soon see when MB have it in 2 weeks

I checked mine out of the car with negative on body of plug and positive on top of plug. Where are you based as I've a spare module you could try if you're near Leicester.
