Gobsmacked

I must be deafer than I realised, as I haven't picked up on rattles from the dashboard of any of the dozen or so new examples I've driven recently. The E Cab did have something vibrating behind my right shoulder, but that's the only example of a noise I've identified.

I had an annoying rattle in a Mitsubishi and a Toyota and a small one in a BMW but both my Mercedes have been completely without rattle even with some reasonable miles on them. Despite my slating of some aspects cabin wise a Mercedes from my experience as driven loads of them is that they are as good ad it gets.

My C350 went back 5 times to fix a rattling seat belt fixture. They eventually replaced the entire seat belt at a cost of over £350 (so the dealer told me) and it cured the problem. I have to say Mercedes Peterborough didn't flinch when I kept bringing it back. They tried until they fixed it.

This was one of the reasons I didn't go MB and went Volvo, every new MB I have driven has annoying rattles from either behind the dash or rear near side window area. Top money for cars with issues like this is just not on. Now covered 20k in my Volvo not a squeak or rattle anywhere and also for the record BMW's aren't that well screwed together either suffering annoying squeaks and rattles. it's really not difficult is it :dk:

I think that Volvo you have is gorgeous Ian..
Seriously beautiful car..
Funny thing is I was thinking about thinking of a Volvo next time I change..

Actually just configured a Volvo on their website. It comes in £2k cheaper than my C350 all in.

Do Volvo discount much these days?

buy a nice w124....

Funny that as I was thinking the same :D

My coupe is 16 years old and has just turned 120k miles

It has a rattle - but that's rear suspension bushes which were picked up as an advisory at the last MOT. So that's fair enough.

Apart from an ocassional comforting creak from the leather, it does not rattle. :bannana:

Ever.

I can't remember the last car I had that rattled or creaked......

I occasionally hear minor fizzes from various pieces of trim in my 211 but never for long. The car's on 108k miles now so and has a pretty firm ride when in Sport II on speedbumps and broken blacktop it's obviously pretty well put together.

Of the six W211's that I've owned, none have had 'squeaks'.

The W212 that I had as a loaner for a month creaked like an old mans knees, the interior plastic also felt cheap compared to my W211. A good friend of mine has a 2012 C350 petrol and that squeaks as well, although he's too busy thrashing it around the moors to worry about that.

W203, MY2006, no rattles. Made in SA.

Maybe the German factories simply can't match the New London factory build quality?

I've always been uber sensitive to rattles of any kind so I was surprised to read all the negative comments here. The only rattle I ever had in ten years on my W208 CLK230K came from the phone holder. I've only had my 2012 C350 for four months and I hope I'm not tempting fate by saying I certainly haven't heard any rattles from inside. Although I was at first disappointed with the rattle that apparently comes from the direct injection, but only noticeable with the bonnet up so I can live with it.

As for suggestions for the OP to change to Volvo, I'm still unable to delete the permanent image I have of Volvo drivers being at least 80 and wearing hats! ;)

Volvos are what got me hooked onto big diesels a number of years ago but the 2.5 second difference in 0-62 timings is just too much of a leap for me right now.

The C220 I had a couple of weeks ago was frustratingly slow compared to what I have today and the D5 is slower (just) than that.

Think either you are unlucky or I'm lucky as mine doesn't rattle at all. Looks like we have the same model as well. Mine was new Feb this year and is very very quiet inside. Seems bizarre they can't fix yours.

Yep 30% on the one I just bought for SWMBO:D Now do you see where I'm coming from? Also don't pay too much attention to the figures on paper they mean nothing a standard MB 350 cdi estate can't get any where near my Volvo despite it being quicker on paper, my colleague has been trying for the last year to no avail and others on here will testify the same As for a C220 not in the same league performance wise as a D5 despite what it says. Volvo and Polestar are extremely conservative with their figures. Drive the cars then get a feel it's the only way.

Because Mercedes are being sold like American cars, - on cheap monthly payments, they have to be built like cheap American cars.

It's what people wanted.

none of you know what rattles / squeeks etc are until you have driven a ten year old Rover 75 - It rattles/squeeks/buzzes A LOT!!!!!

My S211 was a rattly old bus when I bought it, far worse than any of the many Fords I owned previously. I've been on an intensive anti-rattle crusade and it's now acceptably quiet on almost all road surfaces. Luckily, my rattles are all from the rear, which is all accessible.
You obviously never had the dubious privilege of a first generation Ford Scorpio!

Id rather have rattles than rust - it seems MB product issues have shifted...

Well I have my car back.

As I pulled out of the dealers the sun was coming out and the roads were dry again. So instead of driving home listening for rattles, I turned up the music LOUD, put the car in sports mode and drove.

On the back roads across the fens with no other traffic GOD I LOVE WHAT THIS CAR CAN DO

As I entered the edge of my village I turned off the music and slowed to a steady pace.

RATTLE!

Over the level crossing

RATTLE RATTLE!

Over the raised speed humps on the estate (the block paved kind)

RATTLE BUZZ RATTLE

I am totally gutted.

So I have just come off the phone to the dealer and the car is now officially REJECTED!

I have no idea where we go from here but we shall pick this up on Monday morning with the Dealer Principle

I think things are going to get very interesting
