Guys im going to view a e320 w124 this week
It will be my first one so not aware of what to look out for

After selling the c43 been looking at the coupes and really want one

What are these like for rust?
Is there anything in particular i should look out for?

Thanks in advance
Shaz

Cylinder head gaskets can weep oil at the rear of the engine.
Look for evidence of the engine wiring loom being replaced, if not walk away.
Jacking points, rear subframe mounts, and the front wings are the likely places for rust.
If it's a 5 speed auto, make sure it actually gets into 5th gear.
If it has a surging idle, expect issues with the loom or throttle body.

In regards to the loom
How would i know if its been replaced?

Im going to view it in the next hour
In regards to price, what do e320 coupes fetch?

Its a m reg,guy says its been parked up for 2 years on his drive

Thanks for the advice

Mmmm parked for 2 years on his drive- is it even a runner? Seized brakes, flat battery, fuel gone off, Sorned --NO MOT - so no test drive. BE VERY CAREFUL! with non runners there is usually one big historical problem that puts the car off the road- but others may have arisen simply because the car has been sat around. If its a non-driver you are buying "sight unseen" really. You can assess the body work and trim and little else- assume the worst when factoring in what price to pay. :dk:

Yes, and jump starting is a no-no! Plonk in a fresh battery.

The 320 engine had the wiring issue years 93-95, maybe even early 96, the 220 wasn't affected I don't believe. The gasket can weep endlessly on both engines and cause no problems.

Check all electrics work, windows drop and seat belt butler too. Aerial? If sat up for 2 yrs, expect issues when recommissioning. Unless accompanied by full service history and bundle of high value invoices......a few hundred quid in value?

Cheers guys
U guys are great

Just went to view it,after informing him to leave it cold so i can hear it run on cold start he decided to completely ignore me

So i turned up,he just had it washed

And engine was hot,he had it running

So wiring loom had been done, was very lumpy on idle, front shocks were shot, inside engine bay there was a hole due to rust about 3" square.

All electrics worked fine, was actually quite a clean one,but the engine put me off as it was misifirring

Was up for £1995 didnt even make him a offer

What should i expect to pay for one of these?
Not bothered about bodywork as i have a bodyshop

Tell us what you're looking for?

Price (range)
Model
Year
Condition
Colour
Anything else that might be a deal breaker.

The one above sounds like a parts car, they can be money pits, so a value can be +/- £1/2/3/4k!

Mileage??Does not sound like a bad car to be honest and the loom alone will cost half the asking price and maybe even more

Was there an invoice for the loom?

No there wasnt
He said his father whos car it was had it done at a cost of £500

I've got no specific advice for you Shaze but whatever you do, get one. They're a right of passage. I loved mine and miss it every day.

In that case assume the loom to be suspect.

A good tell tale is to look at the connections for the temp sensors at the front of the engine, if you see cracking or bare wire the loom is dead.
