I decided to try out some winter tyres on the 124 as the ones currently fitted are just about had it. So I will just run them year round.

After a brief search on thinterweb I ordered through mytyres.co.uk

In my size (195/65r15) they are offering Avon Ice Touring M+S for £40 each including vat and delivery! I couldn't believe how cheap they are, they are cheaper than Wanli and Ling Long tyres!!!

In all honesty I was half expecting them not to turn up, too good to be true I thought. They turned up after four days.

Very happy and may be worth checking out before buying your next rubber!

I suspect you have bought T rated tyres. For all year use I would have gone for the H or V rated as a minimum- sorry.

Don't think that will be a problem, they have lots of sipes on so should cut through the snow and chuck it out well enough. I know they are not ideal for all year use but the car is only a runabout so will do fine.

I may be wrong, but isn't T rated to 118mph? That's well above the speed limits of most of Western Europe. Shouldn't be a problem unless you plan on going to Germany or on track days.

Or am I missing something in my understanding of tire speed ratings?

I have had a pair of Avon Ice Touring tyres on Mrs Spikes Volvo all year round for 4+ years now (same set). They are completely knackered now and I intend to replace them with a pair of Goodyear eagle vectopr EV2's to match the fronts.

At £40 the Avons seem like a bargain but I would investigate how much a set of the new four season tyres are in your size however as this would be a better compromise for year round use in my opinion.

i have my winter tyres ready but only a pair which will obviously go on the rear. Cant wait for the snow!

AVON TYRES were owned by Cooper Tyre and Rubber Company of America until recently when Cooper tyres were subject to a take over bid by Apollo Tyres of India.
In terms of speed rating I have always been an advocate of the legitimate use of winter tyres all year round in the UK. However I would always advocate to get such winter tyres from a major European Manufacturer with a speed/load rating as close as possible to the cars summer tyres. £61 would have bought an 95H XL rated Nokian WR-D3 in that size [ this years auto express winner] - or £57 a 91H Vredestein SNOWTRAC 3 or 91H
Goodyear ULTRA GRIP 8 which I would have been happier with for insurance purposes.

You should see the tyres its on at the moment!
As for insurance, I don't think I will bother!

That's my thought too. You only get a £60 fine if you're caught without insurance. There's more sheep than police on the roads these days. I'll take my chances.

The chances of me spending £60 on a tyre for an old estate car is very slim.
The £57 Vredestein has the same weight rating as what I bought. The T rating is suitable for a speed which if you where caught at, would be considered dangerous driving so the insurance wouldn't cover you anyway.

I'll keep out of your way, you will have plenty of traction to get up to a speed that you can neither stop from or steer around anything. Good luck.

Apollo tyres of India are the parent company of Vredestein, when the takeover of coopers is complete Apollo will be the 7th largest tyre company in the world.

Let me know when you're out - I'll stay in.

I've run Nankang SV2 Snow all year round, at about £70 a corner from my tyres.

That sounds like a pretty dumb thing to do.

I ran Avon on my C class last year and they were very good. This year on my E350 CDI sport I have dropped to R17 wheels and running Vredstein Wintrac Xtreme 245/45 V rating on all wheels. I have had to experiment a bit with the pressures and am now + 5 psi over summer tyres pressures to calm down the squirm on power. Seems to have brought the handling within limits. I informed insurer on change to Winters and cover note endorsed for no additional premium , you can't be too sure what would happen in the event of a bump!

The Vreds are great on my C63. Cannot describe the difference in grip in ice and snow, simply amazing.

I have these on my 320d touring, and have a set just about to go on to my s124. They are fantastic! I live in a very hilly rural area and they've never lost grip. On a 124 I expect to be at least as good if not better, as e46 bmws can be quite tail happy..
