Grinding from wheels?

Hi guys,

So my partner has an A180 AMG 62 plate and when it's driving there seems to be a sort of grinding noise coming from the wheels as far as I can pinpoint it. The noise is not constant (more like the rate of a steam train ha) but happens more the faster the car goes obviously haha, iv just changed the break pads and I thought that sorted the issue as I couldn't hear it after but I may of been kidding myself thinking I'd sorted the issue haha, could it be the discs need changing? Or someone mentioned the metal cover thing behind the wheel? I'm a novice to this

Don't live somewhere when the car has to drive on loose gravel do you ? Sometimes gravel can get trapped between the disc/caliper and the brake back plate resulting in rather alarming noises as the back plate "sounds/vibrates"

Jack each corner and spin the wheel to see if one of them has more resistance or you can hear it grind. It sounds like a wheel bearing but on a 62 plate is a bit of a surprise. Is it a high mileage car?

Did you grease the caliper sliders when you changed the pads. They can stick and leave the pad rubbing slightly on the disc

I had the very same thing weeks after i had new discs and pads fitted, a trip back to my local indy found the problem within minutes.
The backing plates behind the discs, one of those had slightly warped and was rubbing against the disc when it started to get hot.

^^^ Exactly what I had happened to my A200 after fitting new tyres - OSF wheel - horrible noise ...

Went to my local indie - he didn't even had to look, as soon as he heard the noise, he said "back plate is bent" - a few minutes later I was on my way, and Nick (Parkham Garage Wellingborough) didn't even charged me! :thumb:

Cheers for the replies guys,

Average mileage car? (40k miles)

I live on a building site pretty much, new estate being build bought a house here near the end of the phases but still houses being build around mine and the roads are not finished throughout half the estate so lots of loose stones, gravel and other crap on it

Someone mentioned the backing plates to me, will take a look at them :)
