That's fair enough. Horses for courses I suppose. From my point of view though, when buying a used car, particulary a ten or more year old one, you should always buy the very best you can find. When viewing, it quickly becomes obvious which cars have been cared for, which have been cared for money-no-object, and which have been run on a budget.
My car was bought from Mercedes Salisbury (when they were Caffyns) and every single service has been carried out there. I'm not suggesting that a specialist is going to do a lesser job, but if you can afford to pay main dealer prices to look after the thing for all that time, then when they notify you of an impending problem, you're more likely to get it sorted sooner rather than later.
The first owner of my car said to me "It cost me £52,000, and it was my only luxury for ten years. I am pleased that it's gone to a good home."
