Our old Audi A4 was leaking oil from the oil pressure switch. Local garage quoted £40 to replace (it's round the back of the engine and not easy to reach without a ramp), so I booked it in. Dropped it off on Sunday night and put the keys through the door with a short note giving the reg. no. and what it was in for.

Rang up late afternoon on Monday - "it's all done". Wife went to collect, guy gave her the keys. "Erm ... these aren't my keys". "Oh yes they are". "Oh no they're not".

Out into the car park, where there are two A4 1.9 TDi estates. A red P reg one (ours), and a purple R reg one ... which was booked in for a cam belt change and a new water pump.

You guessed it -they had put the oil pressure switch on the purple one, and done the cam belt and water pump change on ours! :eek:

Much embarassment from the garage, they got another oil pressure switch and fitted it to ours ... picked up yesterday, total bill £42 :bannana:

Got to be the cheapest cam belt change ever?! It's a big job on the A4, most of the front of the car has to come off.

I did feel a bit sorry for them, but I'd had the belt changed 20k miles ago and it certainly didn't need another one. To their credit there was never any suggestion of us paying anything for the 'extra' work done.

Bill:You lucky ......Sounds like Audi allright,my frind took his car for a service and they`ve changed his belt to

Nice result for you :thumb:

Maybe I'm old fashioned, I probably would have asked what the parts cost them and if it was under £50 or £60 offered to pay for the bits, then they only lose their time.

Sweet result. As they appear to be a good garage, they'll get your repeat business so they'll get their money back over years.

i went to collect my mk1 cortina after the mot,and was told it had failed on loads of items they had tested the wrong car.that was a long time ago when the mot,s where done by mechanics not computors(and auto engineers)

I almost moted the wrong car years ago. Guy came in and gave me the keys and told me is was down the street on the left. Went down opened the door, jumped in did a 3 point turn and drove 30yards to the mot bay and drove straight onto the ramp and got out of the car and a guy comes running in asking what the hell I was doing and you've guest it, it was the wrong car but the keys fitted and it was a different blue Cortina that we should have been moting.:crazy:

Well I'm glad I didn't 'contribute', because it's still dripping oil! Maybe they didn't change the oil pressure switch after all.

They previously said the leak was from the oil filter, and did an oil & filter change (which made no difference).

Fords were notorious for that, a friend of mine had an Escort Mexico and we found that my Vauxhall Viva keys worked in the door locks!

I would pressure wash the engine and then you should see where the leak is. Its quite hard to tell if it's been leaking and covered in dirt.

Problem is it's a transverse engine and the leak is round the back ... impossible to see from above. They washed it off last time, when they diagnosed the oil pressure switch.

Not judging by this;
