I would like to put my CD collectino on my hard disk and then be able to listen to my desired track from anywhere in the house...

What hardware do I need to transmit this from my PC to then play it through the stereos in other rooms?

Remember - I am a ludite and "Wireless" to me means the radio.

Cost effective solutions appreciated.

Dont know your existing setup, but I found the range from ROKU to be absolutely amazing. All my music gets ripped from cd's to a central server as hi quality mp3 and then played independetly through Roku units.
