I was thinking of getting some snow socks for my CLK as I only travel 9 miles too and from work and maybe good to have for emergency use only in the snow if we get any.
Anyone tried these and if so which are the best? they are so cheap on ebay and is something good to keep in the boot.

I bought some after the early 2013 snow and my c43 basically couldn't move. Typically it hasn't snowed since.
I looked around and bought some on line for about £30.
They are only very temporary and it clearly states that used on Tarmac will destroy them very quickly. So i keep them in the boot for absolute emergencies. (I had to abandon the 43 in the snow as I got stuck in a valley... Fail).

I have a pair in the boot and actually used them a few years ago.

They're basically for getting you off the snowy side roads and onto the clear main roads.

What about snow chains?

I've seen a lot for sale on eBay...

I live on one side of the city centre and work on the other, so generally I'm ok, as the heat of the city, dense traffic and sewers keep it pretty snow free here, but might get some incase I get caught out...

Yes , I've used them. I live at the bottom of a steep hill but less than a mile to the dual carriageway. They work well and do get you going though once off th snow you nee to stop and take them off. Like you it is only a few miles tony work so haven't had to stop when I've put them on. Do a dry run though as with mine I had to get a piece of wood to be able to push the sock past the wheel. Combination of wide rear tyre and little clearance between the wheel and arch meant my hands wouldn't fit.

Just fit all season tyres.

All year round and work in snow.

As others have said, a very short term solution.
I used them last year on My BMW, on one 80 mile journey I fitted/removed them 5 times.
They got me to my destination but I was soaked, covered in crap and wishing I'd bought winter tyres.

I used them on my C203 320cdi as a get you home solution. They work well and we live in very rural North Yorkshire where snow can be deep. But they are a pain to fit and take off. You can use them on tarmac (speed limited) for a while and I did not notice any particular deterioration when I did a few times.I now ave winter tyres fitted to my car which are better but a lot more expensive .

As stated, snow socks would be very temporary and messy to install/remove. Snow chains are fine but ditto on install/remove(also quite expensive). In USA, the police set up checkpoints and to proceed you must have chains on or 4WD with all season or snow tires. Chains are a devil to put on and off when it is snowing and your hands are literally frozen. They also come loose and destroy your inner wing or wrap around the axle. In most parts of UK all season tyres will suffice, otherwise buy a 4WD
