That's interesting - my original T43 is still going strong (touch wood) at 6yrs old and my current T61 (not the P version) is OK, although the screen is going pink which I gather probably means the inverter is on its way out. I'll change it when I get a new machine.
I upgraded my old 2005 T42p to Win 7 Pro from Xp and it flies. It has a Windows experience rating of 3.5 and is now just like a new machine again. Really impressed with Win 7 and the effect it has on older systems.
I also upgraded my W700 Extreme to Win 7 x64 from Vista and experienced a similar performance boost. All three T61p that I have upgraded to Win 7 from either Vista or XP have become like new machines. The T61 should be exactly the same. You can also extend the warranty on your T61 - that is what I ended up doing on my T61p as it is so good now with Win 7x64.
